Calisthenics in Norway with Bar-Bangerz

Calisthenics/Body-weight training is getting bigger by the day with the help of You-Tube, Twitter, Facebook and other internet sites where bar athletes can showcase their skills to the world!

My friend Ulrik Lion from Norway, whom i’ve been in contact with for a year or so now since we became ‘on-line buddys’ via the Bar-barians forum, set up a bar crew with his workout partner Sindre Skui a couple of years back - and are known as ‘Bar-Bangerz’.

I have been watching the progress of these two young athletes steadily in the bar game and they are now both at a very good level.

There isn’t many parks in Norway (if any) that have workout areas, so back in April 2010 they improvised and built their own, using materials that Sindre had laying around in his backyard!

Then in April 2011 they decided it was time to rebuild the workout park – the old one was completely pulled down and with help from a couple of their friend’s a new one was erected. It is truly amazing wha can be achieved with some good old fashioned determination.

Again, they spent only minimal amounts of cash on the materials, buying bars and cement and luckily one of their friends’ owns an excavator so they were able to dig and create a big enough spot where the park would stand.

So now the Bar-Bangerz workout park – Mark 2 is complete, it is located near the city of Drammen in the village of Lier, on the top of a hill at Sindre’s girlfriend’s house.

On January 20th of this year, Bar-Bangerz were invited by the local sports committee in their area to put on calisthenics show for their annual sports awards show!

The show was held in the city of Drammen which is around 20 minutes drive from the capital city of Oslo.

Ulrik, Sindre, and Lasse Tufte from another bar crew called ‘Urban Nordic’, were the entertainment hired for the after show party - as the guests left the theatre hall, they would enter a lounge where a bar set up for the guys to perform on and showcase their calisthenic/gymnastic/bar skills!

The guys performed demonstrating their muscle up variations, handstands, press up variations, human flags etc for just over 20 minutes non-stop, leaving the crowd speechless and the guys exhausted!

The guys from both Bar-Bangerz and Urban Nordic are are on a mission to build up the calisthenics community in Norway!

At the moment, body-weight training in Norway is slowly becoming more recognised and there are plans to build two public workout parks around the area in the Spring so the guys are expecting it to become more popular after these parks are in place.

They are also planning on hosting a couple of shows prior to the parks being built to promote Norway calisthenics and make people more aware of ‘the sport’.

This is a very interesting video that shows the potential for what we do, with some passion…dedication…and to think outside the box, then you can truly work and play doing something you absolutely love. Well done guys.
