THE 24 HOURS CHARITY MARATHON ROW

Text by  Ivan Gette:

On the day of German unity we will show what unity really means!

In partnership with the non-profit organization DKMS (German bone marrow donation), we want to call upon all CrossFit Boxes to take part in the 24 HOURS CHARITY MARATHON ROW on the 3rd of October 2018 to raise money for the fight against cancer (leukaemia).

Everyone knows a person in his or her mediate or immediate environment who has been killed by, or suffers from, this terrible disease. To increase the chances for the suffering people to get faster help, we, together with you and the DKMS, would like to turn the idea of the 24 HOURS CHARITY MARATHON ROW into reality.

We as a community want to show solidarity with the people, who have to accept the long and hard fight against leukaemia by fighting through the 42,195 km long indoor marathon row and by raising as much money as possible to support the honourable work of the DKMS.

You can join as a Box or as an Individual.

HOW CAN I TAKE PART?

1. Join the Facebook group „24HRS CHARITY MARATHON ROW” and confirm your participation.

2. Share this article and invite your friends.

3. Complete an indoor marathon row in 24 h (42,195 km) alone or in teams of 2, 3, or 4 on the 3rd of October 2018.

For all beginners, please pace yourself and take some drinking breaks if necessary.

4. Share your success within the Facebook group and on Instagram:

Tag our profile for a repost: you can follow us under @marathon_charity_row

Use the following Hashtag to show your support: #charityrow2018

5. Donate an appropriate amount of money for you (either by transfer to the bank account of the DKMS below, or cash into the donation box, which will be standing in your CrossFit affiliate, if the affiliate is taking part).

6. Enjoy your restday afterwards 😉

REGISTRATION

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR CROSSFIT AFFILIATES/BOX OWNERS:

Every CrossFit Affiliate has to register for the Event to take part in the donation process, but has to organise the marathon row in their own respective location.

We recommend that you plan heats according to space and inventory, so that you can get the most from the community spirit.

  • We need an Email address, address and a contact person on site (Your data will be treated confidentially!).
  • After that you will receive a digital flyer for social media promotion via Email, which you can share with your community.

2-3 days before the event the donation box will be send to your affiliate by the DKMS. On the 3rd of October the box should be ready to be filled for 24 hours.

On the 4th of October 2018 we would like to ask all affiliate owners to send back the donation boxes to the address of the DKMS (see below).

INDIVIDUALS, WHO ARE NOT MEMBER IN A CROSSFIT AFFILIATE, BUT WANT TO TAKE PART, TOO:

Everyone who is not able to do the marathon row in a CrossFit affiliate has to complete the 42,195 km within 24 h and donates a variable amount to the DKMS (see account details below).

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

Ivan:

When I was 18 years old I lost my mother to cancer. Back then I really wanted to make a change, but I was lacking the strength and the right momentum to create awareness on a larger scale.

Through my work at Nike and my Box Hauptstadt CrossFit, I was lucky enough to find an amazing Sport with a great community that supports each other and really cares about the people and their health.

Immediately after coming up with the idea of organising a Charity Marathon Row, we immediately found likeminded athletes that wanted to join us, spread the message and support our idea.

Box owners and individuals started calling in after we set up our Facebook Group and our Instsgram Account.

We are super thankful to everyone who is helping us to spread the word and create awareness around that horrible disease. The day of Germany unity was for us the perfect day to organise the event and activate all communities. We organised this event to raise money from the community, for the community since (unfortunately) we all know people in our surroundings that are, or have been, affected by this disease.

It’s really about setting up the first step and creating awareness. These days people are more busy liking cat videos and posting stupid shit on social media without a message, instead, we want to create real impact and help people. It’s easy, till the point where life hits you with bad news. Thanks to everyone for supporting!

Harry:

My will to get active was awakened at the same time that I heard about a young athlete from a Berlin CrossFit box who is suffering from leukemia. Because of her, the Berlin Throwdown initiated a campaign with the DKMS to register as a bone marrow donor during the event, which I did. It created a powerful feeling to have done something important and useful without asking for anything in return.

Everybody has the opinion that charity is good and everybody is always for it. But most people never do anything, because it demands just a little bit too much effort to break out of their comfort zone.

When Ivan told me the story of his mother and that he is willing to engage in the fight against cancer, I realized that this was the moment for me to not just talk the talk, but to walk the walk instead. So that is what we are doing now.

The marathon row from this years CrossFit Games is the perfect set up for that day. Firstly, every serious box has rowers and the event would be easy to organize. Secondly, a lot of Crossfitters strive for their idols and want to redo workouts that they did. Thirdly the marathon row symbolizes the hard and long fight against cancer and shows solidarity with all people who are suffering.

We are doing everything we can to make this event as big as possible and we hope that many other people share our values. Let’s show what unity really means on the day of German unity!

We thank the DKMS for their support and the uncomplicated realization of all necessary organizational steps. We hope that this is just the beginning. Big thanks to everyone who is putting time and effort into this.
