They work closely with other clubs from different sports (field hockey, gymnastics, basketball, weightlifting and running) and Sport Institutes to educate scholars on the basics of Crossfit.
We talked to the owners Tim Broekhoven and Raquel Buckley to find out more about CrossFit 2712.
How did you come to Crossfit?
We both (Raquel & Tim) have a background in fitness. From starting with sports education at school to teaching Yoga, Zumba, Steps, Les Mills, etc.
We also started with the regular fitness to keep our own bodies fit. To challenge ourselves more, we eventually joined a CrossFit box.
Why did you open your own box?
As mentioned above, it was about the quality and paying more attention we missed at our previous box. We believed we should and could do better. Also we missed nutrition guidance and Yoga, something we felt was important to help clients become better at Crossfit.
Why exactly should I join your box? What makes it standout from others?
Next to a massive amount of fun we have, eight factors (we believe) make us unique:
- Only CF L1 certified coaches during the WOD.
- Max. 8 attendees on 1 coach – Quality and attention.
- Max. 16 attendees during a WOD to keep overview and enough guidance – Focus.
- Offering nutritional packages – Health.
- Offering physiotherapeutic packages – Body.
- Quality equipment from Roque and Concept2 – Material.
- Offering classes on other sports, like yoga, running, gymnastics, weightlifting and beasting – Other sports.
- Having a vibrant community of members with great coaches. – Community
How does your member structure look like?
Our ratio male/female is about 40/60. About 10% is above 40 years of age.
We are getting close to 100 members, which is way ahead of projection.
Do you have additional training possibilities (Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?
As discussed earlier we believe offering different classes is important. Yoga, weightlifting, gymnastics and running are on our agenda. Members value that extremely. One of the last things we added to our offering is “Beasting”. This sport was invented by the Dutch elite units such as the Marine Corps and Air Brigade. The magic words are effective and functional. Training devices that are used include kettlebells, ropes, medicine balls, sandbags and a lot of their own body weight. Beasting is designed to increase your explosive strength, power, endurance, cardiovascular status, grip strength, and above all a lot of mental strength. So as you can see lots of comparison with Crossfit, but also adding the mental strength component.
Do you consult your members about nutrition?
We have a so called Stapel Foodcoach. Ruben Stapel, also CF-L1 certified, is coaching our classes, but also offers different packages, depending on the personal goals. About a third of our members are under the guidance of Ruben, subscribed to:
- Athlete Package – tune-up advise
- PR Package – performance advise
- RX Package – weight loss advise.
If I start as a beginner – how does my training look like?
We offer Introduction Courses on Saturdays, which take up twice for two hours, where we educate members on the basics of Crossfit. We’ll end every two hours with a light-weight WOD. All though we never let members know upfront what the WOD will be, for new members we do suggest certain days to be initially more appropriate. Every member will be introduced during his/her first WOD, to make sure that all members will provide support. All about the community.
Do you organize any internal or open competitions?
We are now in a first phase of an internal program, called ALP (Athlete Level Program). Something we introduced on request of our members, who were looking to have an easier reference on keeping track on improvements of their skills, strength and stamina. We introduced 7 levels, where members can have coaches tick of boxes on their achievements. With that goes an optional 7 different colored t-shirts as prove of your achievements.
Do you have links to other boxes?
During the start-up phase we have exchanged a lot of good information with other owners. We have definitely benefited from that. Since we just started, we have been focusing mainly on our own organization. We do have plans to organize some events in the future with other boxes.
Can I drop in if I am passing your city? Who do I have to contact?
Everyone is welcome to join us for a WOD or Open Gym. We would even say, please come and share our passion, drive and motivation to help the community grow. Many members of CrossFit 2712 have already visited other boxes around the world, like UK, Italia, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Greece, US and Australia.
