How did you come to CrossFit?
I was living with an American friend who had done CrossFit in the states. He introduced me to it in a local globo gym. During a random conversation at rugby training one night Cameron and I both realized that we were CrossFitting separately so we decided to train together in my garage and the small rugby club gym.
Why did you open your own box?
As more of our friends found out what we were doing they joined us and we quickly outgrew my garage and the rugby club gym. We kinda got to the situation where it was like – dude we are gonna need a bigger place if we are gonna do this CrossFit stuff properly – so we started looking for industrial units in Aberdeen, and the rest is history as they say.
Why exactly should I join YOUR box? What makes it standout from others?
The community! We’ve worked really hard to install the values of what CrossFit is all about to us – cranking up the music loud, throwing down with your buddies, and hanging out over a few beers and a bbq (when the weather permits). We are all there for eachother, everyone is made to feel welcome and all egos are left outside the front door. This community was recognized at the first team event we ever entered this summer -0 Tribal Clash – where we were awarded the “ Spirit of the Games Award”, something we are all very proud of.
How does your member structure look like? (Number of members, Male/Female, Young/Old, any competitive athletes?)
We currently have approx. 150 regular members varying in age but the split is pretty close the 50-50 male-female. On top of this we have about 50 offshore members. What is really cool about being in Aberdeen – the oil capital of Europe – is that we tend to get lots of drops ins from all over the world as they travel here on business. There are always new faces in the box. We have a good group of up and coming athletes who are training hard for certain competitions next year, its exciting times.
Do you have additional training possibilities (Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?
There’s a group of guys that come in on Friday mornings for yoga, this is self-run by a few of our members. As things grow we will be looking to put on specific lifting, gymnastic and mobility classes on for sure.
Do you consult your members in nutrition questions?
We feel that nutrition is very important, but theres no need for us to “force” information on our clients. If the guys want to learn more on what and how to eat they come to us and we are only more than happy to help and offer advice.
If I start as a beginner – how does my training in the first month look like?
The first thing you have to do is our Fundamentals Course. This comprises of 3 2 ½ hr sessions (1 a week for 3 weeks) where we have white board sessions, mobility sessions and also group coaching scenarios to cover the fundamental movements we use in CrossFit. At the end of every session there is a WOD. After completion of the Fundamentals Class you are free to come to WOD Classes, but we tend to scale right back for at least the first month so new members can concentrate on moving consistently well before we ramp up the intensity. This is a safety feature as much as a confidence preserver.
Do you organize any internal or open competitions?
The last Saturday of every month we have “Team Wars” where mixed teams of 4 throwdown over 4 wods. This has been a key tool in getting everybody from different class times to meet each other and has become a focal point for our community. We also invite other boxes to come up and take part too.
It always creates an awesome atmosphere and is great fun. The focus is on taking part and enjoying.
Do you have links to other boxes?
Yeah we have close links to CrossFit Fife, Reebok CrossFit Glasgow, CrossFit MTS and since they opened CrossFit 57 North Inverness. Saying that though, our doors are open to any other box that wants to come say hi.
Can I drop in if I am passing your city? Who do I have to contact?
Drop ins are welcome. All you have to do is send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and then we can give you instructions to register for a class. If you are ever this far North, be sure to call in for a warm welcome!
