Ramon Gysin, the box-owner of Crossfit Basel, is giving us a little insight into what happens at his BOX! Enjoy another episode of our Europewide BOX interviews.

Address / Location: Frankfurtstrasse 36, 4142 Münchenstein, Switzerland
BOX-Owner: Ramon Gysin
Open since: January 2009
How did you come to CrossFit?
I saw the movie “300” and later its making of. I think Mark Twight, Gym Jones, back then was affiliated with CrossFit and was responsible for getting the actors ready (sixpack 😉 ) for the movie. I was hooked right from the spot. This was summer 2007 or 2008 and I was bored from my own training at this time. I was playing Amateur Soccer and did kind of a Powerbuilding Routine in the Gym. I never trained with machines, always used free weights since I started training at the age of 16, so the transition to CrossFit totally made sense.
At the same time I got known of Powerlifting and in March 2009 I did compete in this Sport for the first time. That’s where all started. Through CrossFit Training I did improve my strength while at the same time being able to play soccer without additional endurance sessions.
Why did you open your own box?
I was bored going to University (I have 90 EC in Economics, took me 6 semester. 😉 ). I earned a living working for a Security Company. I was very passionate about Sport and CrossFit, I coached other Athletes for years already and I wanted to share my passion with others. Nowadays new boxes open up in Europe every day. But in 2009 there were mainly CrossFit Boxes in Great Britain and Scandinavia. In the german speaking area of Europe there was only one other box, CrossFit Ramstein, on a US Army base.
Why exactly should I join YOUR box? What makes it standout from others?
Despite the fact we are a very successful Box with close to 400 members (we will cap at 400), we managed to preserve a very strong and lively community. I know every members name. Due to our vast experience in competitions we are very efficient in improving people’s fitness fast. We run a CrossFit progam, we don’t train random.
Talking about competitions: Since 2011 we had 4 individual athletes and 3 Teams at the European regionals. We hold over 80 swiss records in Power- and Olympic Weightlifting, numerous national and international titles in Powerlifting, Olympic Weightlifting and Strongman as well, and even a World record ).
We deliver results constantly. We take this knowledge and experience we gain with this competitions to improve the life of those who aim for fitness, health and wellbeing.
How does your member structure look like? (Number of members, Male/Female, Young/Old, any competitive athletes?)
400 members. Our classes are capped at 10 people, which states that we operate in the high quality/high price niche. Employed people between the age of 25 and 45 are our main clients. 60/40 male/female.
About 50 clients compete in those sports I mentioned above.
Do you have additional training possibilities (Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?
We had a KAPAP (Krav Maga) and a Yoga Class in the past. We have a lot of specialty classes like Olympic lifting, Strongman, Outdoor, Endurance. The newest addition is Lynns Therapy )
Do you consult your members in nutrition questions?
Yes, I do. I have a pragmatic approach to Paleo and my goal is, to help members changing their habits. Eating habits are very individual and I try to educate and support clients to find their own solution with their own special needs. Too much people fail, because they do not have a realistic approach and their goals differs too much from what they are capable of.
If I start as a beginner – how does my training in the first month look like.
We run beginners classes but do not have an on ramp system. I believe in giving clients as much freedom in terms of choosing their classes.
The trade off is, our coaches need to be top notch to handle the different levels of clients in a class.
Do you organize any internal or open competitions?
From the beginning it was my believe, that it is very important to strengthen the CrossFit Community by bringing people from different boxes together. Euan Robertson from CrossFit Leman and CrossFit Basel organize the biggest CrossFit Team comp in Switzerland, the “Swiss Team CHallenge”. 87 Teams of 4 persons were participating in this year’s 4th edition.
In 2013 we did host a Swiss national Powerlifting championship and we were also hosting 2 Strongman Competitions each year. On December 13. and 14. 2013 we did host the second edition of a competition called “are you tough enough?” which is designed to bring some of the best CrossFitters in continental Europe together.
Do you have links to other boxes?
We travel a lot and as we are hosting L1 and other Seminars for CF headquarter I am in good contact with a lot of box owners in Europe. My entire environment and my social network are almost exclusive CrossFitters. CrossFit is my life and I love it.
Can I drop in if I am passing your city? Who do I have to contact?
Are you serious? This is one of the many great things within CrossFit, the Community. When I travel other countries, the first thing I do, is checking map.crossfit.com to check out which Boxes I can visit. So I expect every CrossFitter who travels to Basel to come to my Box! Don’t forget to bring me a shirt! To schedule a class, simply Email to firstname.lastname@example.org
