How did you come to CrossFit?
I’m an Ex-Marine and used to train a lot with Kettlebells and functional movements when I was out in Afghanistan, one day some US Marines came over when I was training and asked if I was doing CrossFit, I’d never heard of it so I went and did some research and as soon as I got home I hunted down my nearest box and just dove in head first.
Why did you open your own box?
I was due to leave the Marines and couldn’t stand the thought of an office job. I love coaching and had been training people for years in functional movements. There was no CF Box in my area, so It just made perfect sense to do it.
Why exactly should I join YOUR box? What makes it standout from others?
We pride ourselves on giving a very high standard of coaching and programming, we won’t accept anything less, but at the same time promote a friendly and fun training environment for our members. Our two full time coaches are both Ex Royal Marines and have been training people for years in military and civilian environments, with numerous coaching, nutritional, strength and conditioning qualifications under their belt. We are also supported by 3 part time coaches who are all incredibly talented and have a wealth of knowledge.
All our coaches have developed their own area of expertise, be it gymnastics, Olympic lifting, or Powerlifting, and we constantly coach each other in these areas so we can pass on better quality information and coaching to our members.
How does your member structure look like? (Number of members, Male/Female, Young/Old, any competitive athletes?)
We are now over 100 members strong, and our community is incredibly tight. We used to be mainly male but female members have increased a lot lately and we are now around 50/50, with a very wide varying age range. Most our members are brand new to CrossFit but have still competed in several smaller throwdowns, and competitions. All our coaches compete regularly and some are looking very promising for the future.
Do you have additional training possibilities (Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?
We don’t offer any extra classes at the moment but we do put on regular specific workshops, such as rope climbing, Olympic lifting, Kettlebells etc. We also give all of our members am individually tailored strength program they can follow in open gym sessions to complement their CrossFit Classes.
Do you consult your members in nutrition questions?
Yes, 2 of our coaches are fully qualified sports nutritionists and we regularly give out free advice and nutrition plans to help our athletes boost their performance.
If I start as a beginner – how does my training in the first month look like?
As a beginner you will first have to complete our Foundation course. This consists of 2 sessions both 2 and a half hours long where we teach you all the movements to a basic level and until we deem you to be safe at performing them. If we feel you need extra coaching after this we will give personal training sessions till we are happy but the majority upon completion of this course can then participate in the classes with everyone else. For the first month though we will scale the weights down a fair amount and give you extra attention until we are happy you have found your feet.
Do you organize any internal or open competitions?
Yes we organise an in house summer and winter throwdown for our members only. We also strongly encourage our members to participate in events such as the London throwdown and the CrossFit open, as well as entering teams into as many other competitions as we possibly can around the UK. We are also entered into the Dominance series this year and so take teams to other boxes to complete the WODs and host the other teams at our box as much as possible.
Do you have links to other boxes?
We don’t currently have any links, but we do have good relationships with several boxes close to us such as CF Wyre Forrest, CF Second City, Unit 22 and CF Worcestershire.
Can I drop in if I am passing your city? Who do I have to contact?
Yes, we love having drop ins from visiting crossfitters. Just message us through our facebook page or email us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
