How did you come to CrossFit?

I had done a variety of sports growing up and as you would expect career wise it was a an easy decision to enter the fitness industry. My training has always been focused on performance and functionality and someone in my gym saw me training and challenged me to try “Cindy”. Twenty minutes later neither less to say I was rolling around on the floor and needed to know more.

Why did you open your own box?

I have always loved training people, but the “globo” gym environment doesn’t lend itself to what I believe is essential to human performance making it actually harder than easier to help people. It frustrated me that my bosses were more interested in the number of people coming through the door and not the number of people that were actually getting benefit from my coaching. Opening a box was a dream come true, it was a chance to create our own environment to help people and build a community around what we do and love.

Why exactly should I join YOUR box? What makes it stand out from others?

We have a great dynamic at the box with a family orientated approach which is based on having fun (if you don’t enjoy exercise – you won’t say exercising!). That being said both my partner, Athalie and I compete regularly and encourage anyone who is interested to work towards this. The structured training programme reflects this, no matter what level you are at you are constantly challenging your boundaries.

How does your member structure look like? (Number of members, Male/Female, Young/Old,  any competitive athletes?)

We have around 110 members and a real mix from all different backgrounds, ages etc. I’d say we have about an equal split between male and female members and a few competitive athletes hoping to go to Regionals next year currently competing on the circuit as well as my mum (who is in her late 50’s).

Do you have additional training possibilities (Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?

We tend to run specialist seminars for certain things and these are scheduled intermittently. We have worked with the GB weightlifting coaches for the Olympic lifts, organize track sessions for running and run specific gymnastic sessions.

Do you consult your members in nutrition questions?

Yes, but when the members come to us and ask. We don’t tend to preach or prescribe a general nutrition plan as nutrition can be so individualized and it’s important to recognize this. Now and again we run a nutrition seminar if there is a demand for it to disseminate knowledge.

If I start as a beginner – how does my training in the first month look like?

We want you to get a feel for what you’ll be doing and so offer free taster sessions in the beginning. This is with the rest of the members but we have a separate coach just looking after you throughout the session. If you enjoy that, then you will attend our induction course, which is 3x 2-hour sessions and focuses on preparing you for the classes and the fundamental movements you will come across in Crossfit. The induction price also includes 2 weeks of membership on completion so you can see how the schedule fits in with your routine.

Do you organize any internal or open competitions?

We haven’t ran any external competitions, but have lots of members doing qualifiers for various throwdowns and of course the Open. If the competition permits we may hold in-house qualifiers for Deviant teams to a) give those who are starting out on their competitive journey an opportunity to experience what they are like and b) to help us to pick teams to represent the box.

Do you have links to other boxes?

We are proud to be part of the Worldwide Crossfit community. We will always be indebted to Andy Ward at CrossFit Nottingham for introducing us both to the sport. We have also be very fortunate to see a number of our old friends from Nottingham and surrounding boxes set up themselves, namely at Central Staffs, Coventry, 17 (Mansfield), Whitham, Loughborough and Worksop.

Can I drop in if I am passing your city? Who do I have to contact?

Of Course! We have had drop ins from all over the UK and abroad – everyone is welcome, no charge (but we always welcome box t-shirts for our wall!!). Contact us on Facebook or via Email: crossfitdeviant@gmail.com
