Antti Akonniemi, the box-owner of Crossfit Herttoniemi, is giving us a little insight into what happens at it’s BOX! Enjoy another episode of our Europewide BOX interviews.
Name: CrossFit Herttoniemi
Address / Location: Laivalahdenkatu 4A, Helsinki, Finland
BOX-Owner: Antti Akonniemi
Open since: April 2013
How did you come to CrossFit?
In my previous life I did Brazilian Jiujitsu and in 2004 I found Crossfit from an article I read about MMA fighter B.J. Penn. After that CrossFit has been a part of my life. Nowadays I coach, train and also run a project called WODconnect that helps athletes and gyms become better.
Why did you open your own box?
I just wanted to do my own thing.
Why exactly should I join YOUR box? What makes it standout from others?
It’s the community. It’s something that I haven’t experienced anywhere else. We also just moved to a bigger place (one of the biggest in Finland).
How does your member structure look like? (Number of members, Male/Female, Young/Old, any competitive athletes?)
At the moment we have around 200 members. I’d guess around 60% female and most are around 25-35 years. We also have a bunch of competitors (20 that are in “competition team”).
Do you have additional training possibilities (Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?
We have gymnastics class on Wednesdays and some speciality seminars every now and then.
Do you consult your members in nutrition questions?
Not that much. We give some advice, but we don’t do nutrition coaching.
If I start as a beginner – how does my training in the first month look like?
You’ll participate in On Ramp course that is 4 weeks, 3 sessions per week. During the On Ramp course you’ll learn the basic movements and get few great workouts done.
Do you organize any internal or open competitions?
We’ve had some internal competitions, but most probably we’ll not organize open competitions because there are already so many here in Finland.
Do you have links to other boxes?
Finland has a really closely knit community, so we have links to all boxes in Finland. We have especially tight links to CrossFit Espoo and CrossFit 10K. Our members can use their services for free.
Can I drop in if I am passing your city? Who do I have to contact?
Sure thing! Drop-in fee is 10 euros and you can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
