How did you come to CrossFit?
Back in 2008 Jonny had been living in Hong Kong and was finishing up playing rugby and was looking to move into the strength and conditioning. While studying for his NASM qualification there he came across CrossFit and began trying the workouts on his own. Jamie had already worked in S & C in Australia and Scotland. When Jonny moved back to Scotland he got Jamie involved in CrossFit.
Why did you open your own box?
We both wanted to open a strength and conditioning facility in Edinburgh. In terms of bringing the concept of training like an athlete to the general population, CrossFit is second to none. It was the natural choice. We were Edinburgh’s first dedicated CrossFit facility.
Why exactly should I join YOUR box? What makes it standout from others?
We have developed a really amazing community in the short time we have been a box. We have people from all over the lothians coming to us begin their journey into CrossFIt, and they stay once they are here. New members are warmly welcomed and actively encouraged to throw themselves in to all aspects of our boxlife, both training and socially.
How does your member structure look like? (Number of members, Male/Female, Young/Old, any competitive athletes?)
We have 180 members, and that number is growing . The split of male and females is actually more females (perhaps an incentive for some to join!). We will hopefully be moving to a larger facility soon where we can accommodate more athletes. We have developed a really good stable of competitive athletes too – many of our guy and girls are competing, and always looking to participate in events nationwide. 3 of our guys represented Scotland in the recent Inov-8 4 Nations competition at Train in Manchester.
Do you have additional training possibilities (Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?
We hold a weekly Olympic weightlifting class where we focus on the primary lifts and accessory lifts – positions are really worked hard here. We also have guys go down to a local gymnastics class at a special facility once a week.
Do you consult your members in nutrition questions?
We have held nutritional challenges with our members with huge success. People learn to change their eating habits, learn how to fuel themselves for their workouts and learn to plan their food for the week ahead. We encourage our new members to “be in our ear” about their nutrition so that we can find the right fit for them.
If I start as a beginner – how does my training in the first month look like?
Our Elements class is a 2hr induction where we teach you the fundamental movements in CrossFit. You are then given a free taster class where they work with you one on one within the class to help progress you quickly. With all our classes currently capped at 10 people, individual focus is a very important part of what we do. Our new members progress fast and very quickly are making steps up the CrossFit skills ladder.
Do you organize any internal or open competitions?
We have done some internal Competitions and WODs. We have 5 teams actively participating in the Dominance series so we have monthly throwdowns with other boxes. We have plans in the pipeline for a major competition next summer though…watch this space. We were very lucky to host Rich Froning recently for a BSN sponsored seminar. It was a huge success with 45 athletes and coaches descending on the box. It was a very special day for us.
Do you have links to other boxes?
Not officially, but given the Scottish CrossFit community is still growing we are in constant contact with our friends in the North and the West.
