How did you come to CrossFit?

I was introduced to Crossfit whilst I was playing American Football in the US. The Coaches recommended it to get in shape for pre-season.  After a few sessions I was hooked!!!

Why did you open your own box?

Since studying for my Degree in Sport Science Biomechanics and Physiology, I have always wanted to open my own facility. I wanted to work with Athletes from different disciplines and after experiencing Crossfit it felt natural to pursue opening my own Box. We now have ‘Crossfit Football’ at Crossfit Solent and we’re working with two teams throughout the year.

Why exactly should I join YOUR box? What makes it standout from others?

One simple word, ‘BASICS’ – Getting the basics right before moving on. At Crossfit Solent we focus on smaller groups of 10-12 people max. We feel this allows people to get the attention they deserve. Two other ‘standout’ factors are the Welcome that we as Coaches extend to our members and the Crossfit Solent Community that has grown fantastically since opening in 2011. New members will transition from the Taster session, to the Intro course, to graduating to the WOD classes – We integrate you in to the Crossfit Solent family wanting you to feel welcome and a part of our Community.

How does your member structure look like? (Number of members, Male/Female,Young/Old, any competitive athletes?

We currently have 85 active members, of which 31 are female and 54 are male. The ages of our members ranges from 14 – 45 years old. We have a number of competitive athletes who attend Team training on Tuesday nights, who battle it out to represent Crossfit Solent at events all-round the region.

Do you have additional training possibilities (Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?

We have Gymnastics every Saturday. We believe Gymnastics to be a very important aspect of Crossfit and of fitness in general. We also run Oly lifting classes throughout the week, as well as Crossfit Football which I mentioned earlier. We are planning Yoga classes in the future.

Do you consult your members in nutrition questions?

We are coming to the end of our Fat Burning contest, which has been a great Community event. It’s allowed the members to help each other out and is just another great way of continuing to build our Community. We provided them with an E-Book full of information on habits and eating techniques. We also provided New Starters with a Journal, highlighting eating patterns, tips and plans to help start them off.

If I start as a beginner – how does my training in the first month look like?

We focus a lot on the transition and journey that people take when they begin Crossfit. Firstly you will attend a Taster session, which provides people with a taste of Crossfit, its ethos and structure. From there you would book on to the Intro Course, which lasts one month, 2 sessions a week, 8 sessions in total.  We also recommend people to attend the Open Gym sessions to practice what they learn in the Intro course. This has been very successful. On completion of the Intro Course you graduate to the WOD classes and are fully welcomed to the Crossfit Solent Family.

Do you organize any internal or open competitions?

We always have a big Crossfit Total event. At the beginning and end of our Strength Phase in the programming, we have a big gathering and lift heavy s#$t. We also have in house comps to decipher our Teams for competitions. This year we intend to have a big Crossfit Open WOD.

Do you have links to other boxes?

We have had several events with Crossfit Southampton and this year the Dominance Series has enabled Crossfit Solent members to visit other Boxes and compete.

Can I drop in if I am passing your city? Who do I have to contact?

We always welcome visitors and love having people drop by and throwdown with us! We have had people visit us from all over the world. Bring a T-shirt and sign our Visitor Book. Send us a message via the website www.crossfit-solent.co.uk
