Crossfit Swords – Ireland

Jamie Lawlor, the box-owner of Crossfit Swords, is giving us a little insight into what happens at his BOX! Enjoy another episode of our Europewide BOX interviews.

Short Facts

Name: CrossFit Swords
Location: Airside Retail Park, Swords, Dublin, Ireland.
Owner: Jamie Lawlor
Open Since: Summer 2012

How did you come to CrossFit?

Watching videos in the early days of Annie Sakamoto and her crew hitting WODs, along with listening to Coach G and his thoughts on fitness. It all just blew my mind. Dived in head-first from there and I never looked back.

Why did you open your own box?

Having trained athletes for years in various different facilities, it was always a dream of mine to open a gym which I could build around the needs of the training, not the other way around. It’s been very satisfying putting it together, piece by piece.

Why exactly should I join YOUR box? What makes it stand out from others?

I could go into a long list of all the good things about our box, but at the end of the day, what matters is that the coaching is of a high standard and you will have a lot of fun working out with us. Promise!

How does your member structure look like?

We have around 70 members right now. The Male-female split is pretty even, with slightly more women than men. One of our favorite parts of our Box are the flags on the walls. We have people from all over the world training with us and they all have their flag up. Everyone feels like they belong and they are just the best bunch of people you are ever likely to meet

Do you have additional training possibilities(Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?

Nope, we are a strength and conditioning facility. End of.

Do you consult your members in nutrition questions?

Of course. We cover it in our fundamentals, and then it comes down to the coach-athlete conversations. Everyone is different, so we deal with every athlete individually and try give them the support they need.

If I start as a beginner – how does my training in the first month look like?

Normally, it’s a trial class followed by a 3-week fundamentals course. We believe in starting you off on the right foot. This means getting you moving well, building a solid fitness base and making you feel at home.

Do you organise any internal or open competitions?

We ran a competition “The Filthy 150” this year along with CrossFit Navan and it was a huge success. There were 6 gyms participating from all over Ireland, and everyone brought their A-game. As well as the “Elites” from each box competing, we also had a team competition and “Community Wods” for the spectators on the day. It all worked really well, with everyone involved at some level.

Do you have links to other boxes?

Ireland is a small place, but CrossFit is becoming huge here. As mentioned above, we have great links with CrossFit Navan, along with CrossFit Letterkenny, CrossFit Bray, CrossFit Mallow & CrossFit Kilkenny who all competed at “The Filthy 150”. With new boxes opening all the time, we look forward to building more relationships next year.

Can I drop in if I am passing your city? Who do I have to contact?

We love receiving CrossFitters from other boxes. We are 5 mins from Dublin Airport so get plenty of visitors. Simply email us at info@crossfitswords.ie and we will set you up.
