The opening of CrossFit Wigan took place this weekend so we caught up with it’s brainchild, Mike Reid.

Mike Reid, owner at CrossFit Wigan, was proud to announce the latest addition to the CrossFit community. The journey to affiliation started just under 2 years ago with a mainsite WOD “20 min AMRAP Row 250m/25press-ups”

Mike was a freelance PT for nearly 10years at a private gym; “

a profession I found massively rewarding. When a client comes along who really wants to make a difference to their health and indeed their life and the results come, it’s an amazing feeling of achievement and fulfilment for both of us (the best part of my job without a doubt). I thought I had established a clear career pathway, which I was content with”.

“All  seemed good until 24th March 2011 (I remember this but can’t remember the my partner Hannahs’ birthday ha)
A member at the private gym, now a coach at CrossFit Wigan, challenged me to try the row/press up WOD to see if I could better his score (I did). In full view of globo members, I thrashed it out and with Jon’s score to aim for I found myself in a place I hadn’t been in for a long time….Wow!!! 20mins passed and it was over, my first “WOD” I felt invigorated although a little sick and dizzy.”

“My introduction to CrossFit was set and in May 2011 we travelled to The Reebok Stadium to watch the euro regionals and we were hooked. Next step a trip in Dec 2012 to CrossFit Velocity in Swansea, gaining our Level1 CF qualification. Then the search for an industrial unit within Wigan to open as our very own CrossFit box and in July we found exactly what we’d been looking for. After that everything seemed to happen in a flash and with the help and at times guidance of my good friends Jonathan Wareing and Paul Simmons and also the patience and understanding of my partner Hannah, within a month I’d signed papers to lease the 2150sqf unit and a month later we’re in!”

“We had our opening weekend over 31st August and 1st Sept with Team and Individual WODs. Both days were well attended and it was good to see fellow CrossFitters from other affiliates and complete novices who had never stepped foot in a box before. The atmosphere was great and everybody had a great time. We officially open on the 3rd September and I can’t wait to open the shutters for the first WOD; 20min AMRAP of Row and Press Ups”
