How did you come to CrossFit?
I was really bored of my Job as a Fitness Professional and stumbled over some Videos on YouTube. Seeing these Performance Monsters crush every task they were handed got me interested. So I researched a little, started training, went to the level 1 cert, and BOOM – I WAS HOOKED.
WHY did you open your own box?
As I said before I was bored, nothing ever really changes in the fitness industry, and as an employee or freelancer it is difficult to do anything revolutionary. So opening a business was planned anyways, coming across CrossFit was just ‘good timing’. The funding took some time, but finally it all worked out.
What do you offer clients at your box? What makes it standout from others?
It is very friendly and colourful. Most places I go to are very dark, gritty, and have mean looking paintings – you can get that impression from CrossFit – for me it´s more like our Box: not scary at all but very warm and welcoming to everyone.
What does your member structure look like?
We are at roughly 120 members at the moment. We are a fairly young Box – although our ages range up to the mid 50’s too. We have lifetime athletes who compare their scores with the games athletes and people who can´t coordinate a press over head with the PVC pipe – we are a very mixed family and encourage positive support for everyone…especially to anyone starting up!
Do you have additional training possibilities at the Box (Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?
We have just started with gymnastics and mobility sessions / WOD. Over Spring, Summer and Autumn we organise outside training, CrossFit or different sports. I have a few things I´d like to integrate, but we have only been here for 10months… so I´m not rushing things.
Do you consult your members on nutrition?
We do help beginners with the basics but other than that I believe, even more than in training and programming, experimenting and self education is the key to getting your personally suited nutrition diet figured out. We just guide our members along that process.
If I start as a beginner – what does my training during the first month look like?
Like everybody else in the gym however you just get variations to work with and (a lot) less weight. Beginners get instructed to work for control and forget the speed and REPs on weighted exercises. We have OLY sessions which are a MUST for beginners.
Do you organize any internal or open competitions?
We are just (next two weeks) hosting our OpenBox Games with a handful of affiliates taking part – it will be a blast.
Can I drop in if I am passing your city? Who do I have to contact?
Visitors from other Affiliates are always welcome!
Just get in contact with Peter at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What’s your take on Fitness?
Enjoy everything! I enjoy Gymnastics, advanced skills, rock climbing, dancing (things I´m good at) but also try to have my fun while lifting heavy, running, playing football – most of us aren´t in it for the money. It´s just about challenging yourself and your body. So every new thing you can´t do should be motivating = fun to get better at.
