How did you come to CrossFit?
I work in the fitness industry since 2006, and I first heard of CrossFit in 2010. My first WOD was “Filthy Fifty” and I was amazed with the effect it had on me. I got my Level 1 in March 2011 and since then I’ve continued studying the CrossFit methodology (I got the Endurance, Mobility and Coach Prep Courses, and I’ll be attending the Weightlifting Course in March 2014) and I just became an addict.
Why did you open your own box?
It was simply the next natural step. There wasn’t any Affiliate CrossFit Box in my home town, and my belief in the CrossFit methodology as a powerful instrument to change people’s life and my passion for it simply led me to that direction.
Why exactly should I join YOUR box? What makes it standout from others?
Alongside being the very first Affiliate Box in Oporto, our main focus is correct technique, consistency and then intensity. We spend a lot of time teaching our members the correct technique for each exercise, cause we believe that good and safe technique is fundamental for the progression of any athlete, regardless of the starting point.
How does your member structure look like? (Number of members, Male/Female, Young/Old, any competitive athletes?)
We only opened about 3 months ago and already have more than the expected number of members for such short period. Our member come from all walks of society, and very different ages. We have a female Olympic Swimmer training with us, and we also have one of the top male Portuguese CrossFitters.
Do you have additional training possibilities (Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?
No. We are a pure CrossFit Box, we only have CrossFit classes. We are considering the possibility of having CrossFit Kids classes also.
Do you consult your members in nutrition questions?
We offer some advice on that area, mainly advices on Paleo nutrition, but we strongly encourage our members that are serious about their nutrition to consult with a Professional Sports Nutritionist.
If I start as a beginner – how does my training in the first month look like?
For now, and because our Box is very new, our classes are the same for everyone, and we insist a lot on working on technique. We just adjust the WOD’s so that everyone can execute them with safety and quality. We also have On-Ramp special classes, so that you can start with the right basis. In the future, depending on our members’ evolution, we consider the possibility of creating different level classes – beginners, intermediate, advanced and “mutant” (elite).
Do you organize any internal or open competitions?
Not for now, but were considering that possibility.
Do you have links to other boxes?
We have a very special connection to CrossFit LX, that we call our “sister” Box in Lisbon.
