How did you come to CrossFit?
I started CrossFitting in August 2009 after reading a magazine article about it, i struggled for 4months trying to do mainsite workouts on a typical ‘globo-gym’ setting, when CrossFit Thames opened in late 2009 I joined as one of the first few members. In CrossFit I found something that could push me physically and physiologically, not to mention allowing me join one of the most unique and inspiring communities I have ever been part of.
Why did you open your own box?
I originally started at Thames as a member, Jay and Jami (the other owners) gave me the opportunity to start coaching and supported me in my development. When the opportunity came up to take a ownership stake in the business I jumped at the chance. I feel extremely blessed to be where I am today.
Why exactly should I join YOUR box? What makes it standout from others?
Quality of coaching and quality of movement. We prioritise getting our members to move safely, more efficiently and teach them how to apply movement to other areas. Their time at the gym should be spent developing the art of movement, while getting fit and having fun at the same time.
How does your member structure look like? (Number of members, Male/Female, Young/Old, any competitive athletes?)
We have around 240 members at the moment, with a fairly even split of males and females. The range of abilities is spread, we operate our structure on Athlete Levels (beginner, intermediate, intermediate+, and advanced). Each level has certain benchmarks our athletes have to achieve in order to progress to the next level. We have found that our Athletic Levels gives members direction in their training and they can focus on areas that they need to work on.
Do you have additional training possibilities (Yoga, Gymnastics etc.)?
We run a special Weightlifting Club which is solely focused on the Olympic Lifts. We work with former Olympian Chad Vaughn who designs the program for us, its had a hugely positive response from our members and is one of our most popular class types. From January 2014 we will be revamping our class structure with sessions called CrossFit Foundations, Classic CrossFit and CrossFit Sport aimed at providing tailored coaching to beginners, seasoned CrossFitters and those interested in competing in CrossFit.
Do you consult your members in nutrition questions?
Yes of course, nutrition is a very important part to ones training and lifestyle. We do not force any one approach on our members as nutrition is not a one size fits all, we have some general guidelines for base recommendations, then if people need a more tailored approach to meet their goals we are there to help.
If I start as a beginner – how does my training in the first month look like?
We are about to make some changes to how a complete beginner develops in their first few months, so watch this space, but essentially we are developing a separate strand of programming designed to get a complete beginner to a level where they feel comfortable and confident in taking any CrossFit class.
Do you organize any internal or open competitions?
Internally we are always having small competitions and events from throwdowns to our recent Christmas event, ‘The 12 Days of CrossFit’ which saw members try to complete 12 consecutive days of benchmark workouts.
Do you have links to other boxes?
Recently we have been working with another London gym, CrossFit South London on inter-box Throwdowns which have been a huge success with our members, we hope to roll this out to the other members of our London community.
Can I drop in if I am passing your city? Who do I have to contact?
Sure, we love to have people visit us, its great to meet folks from other walks of life. Visitors can contact us via phone (0203 318 5900), email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or just by dropping by the gym.
