Two Teenagers Top the 2021 CrossFit Open Leaderboard After 21.2

Teenage CrossFit athletes Emma Cary (16) and Mallory O’Brien (17) are leading the Women’s Individual Division after two workouts.

After two workouts and only one left to go, the 2021 CrossFit Open leaderboards are starting to take shape. While all the usual names can be seen in the Top 10, the overall worldwide Individual Woman’s category is currently being led by Mallory O’Brien (1) and Emma Cary (2); two US-based teens I’m sure we will be hearing a lot more from in the months to come.

Once the scores are finalised on Wednesday evening, and as long as she incurs no penalties, Emma Cary will be the youngest person ever to win an Open Workout, clocking a staggeringly impressive 8:51 in 21.2 — a whole one-minute faster than the winning time for 17.1. Mallory O’Brien also completed 21.2 with a sub 10-minute score of 9:17. Cary became the Fittest 15-year-old on Earth in 2019, and followed it up with an impressive second-place Open finish in 2020 (Girls 16-17).

With 12 points, Mallory O’Brien leads the Individual Women’s category, two spots ahead of Fittest on Earth Tia-Clair Toomy who sits in 3rd. She is the only athlete in any division to finish in the Top 10 for both workouts released so far, finishing 4th in 21.1 and 8th in 21.2. Whether she can hold onto the #1 position after 21.3 remains to be seen, but with the final Open workout likely to be a test of strength, it doesn’t look like that will be much of an issue for this teen.

Mallory has qualified for every Games she has been eligable for since she was 14, but took a year off from competitive CrossFit in 2020 following a tough 2019 season. Despite being just 17, it’s likely that she will move up to the Elite Women’s division following a dominating performance at the CrossFit Lowlands Throwdown online qualifier last March, and the incredible Open performance we see now.

Both Cary and O’Brien are tied in the Girls (16-17) category with 3 points each. As the Open continues, both teenagers are looking at invites to the Quarterfinals alongside CrossFit’s most seasoned veterans.
