Going into the race, Jess Pettrow, Calypso Sheridan, Gabrielle Nikora-Baker were the top favorites, each selected by the commentators as the top 3 podium contenders.

Jess Pettrow comes from a track background, combined with CrossFit experience prior to HYROX, and she is fiercely strong at wall balls.

Sheridan looked comfortable throughout the early stages of the race, and clearly had fun out on the course. Her and Nikora-Baker from New Zealand established a comfortable early lead while the rest of the competitors tried unsuccessfully to chase them down.

Jess lost a little ground on the sled push. She also tends to race without looking at a watch which is interesting in comparison to the rest of the field.

On the burpee broad jumps, many of the athletes opted for a step, step technique, popularized by Cole Learn, that is thought to be slightly more energy efficient. Lara Saunders got a yellow card on the burpee broad jumps due to staggered feet.

Sheridan was around 75m ahead of Nikora-Baker when the latter arrived at the rowing station.

Race Tip: Keep your handle path flat to make the rowing erg more effective. Don’t waste your valuable energy!

At this point in the race Lara Saunders was leading the chasing pack. She managed to move up in the rankings on every workout station during the first half of the race.

Sheridan was first into sandbag lunges. She kept extending the lead between her and Nikora-Baker. Pettrow moved up into third place after the lunges and tried to chase down the two athletes ahead of her.

Sheridan was comfortably first into the wall balls workout station. Despite18 no reps she sprinted to the finish line and cartwheeled her way across it.

She has qualified for Stockholm, and will combine her HYROX training alongside her training for the LA 2028 Olympics, where she will take part in the Modern Pentathlon. This impressive win comes only a week after she quit her job to focus full time on her career as an athlete.
