HYROX continues its global expansion this week as HYROX Cancún 2026 prepares to take place from March 13–15 at Malecón Tajamar, marking the first time the international fitness racing competition will be staged outdoors on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
Organisers expect the event to attract more than 10,000 athletes and over 30,000 visitors, transforming the waterfront venue into one of the largest hybrid fitness gatherings in the region.
The event will be held at Malecón Tajamar, a scenic waterfront location in Cancún that offers a unique backdrop for competitors tackling the demanding HYROX race format.
Local officials believe the event will highlight Cancún’s growing reputation as a destination for international sports tourism.
“Cancún is ready to host the most spectacular and incredible sports event of the year,” said Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña, mayor of Cancún, during an inspection of the race circuit in remarks shared on social media.
Peralta added that the event is being organised with strong support from state authorities and tourism partners, with careful attention to ensuring a positive experience for athletes traveling to compete in the city.
A Unique Setting for Fitness Racing

While HYROX races traditionally take place inside large exhibition halls or arenas, the Cancún edition will introduce a different atmosphere.
The course will be set outdoors near the Caribbean Sea, providing athletes with a rare open-air environment for the race. Organisers say the event could become a landmark edition within the global HYROX calendar.
According to Juan Carlos Urquiza, operations director for HYROX Mexico, the Cancún race will welcome competitors from across Mexico and internationally, including athletes traveling from the United States, Canada and Europe.
The event will also represent an opportunity to showcase the region’s natural setting alongside the rapidly growing sport of hybrid fitness racing.
The HYROX Race Format
Athletes competing in Cancún will face the standard HYROX challenge that has become a signature of the sport worldwide.
The race consists of eight 1-kilometre runs, each followed by a functional workout station. The sequence includes exercises such as SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer’s carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls.
This combination of endurance running and strength-based movements has helped HYROX grow into one of the fastest-expanding fitness competitions globally.

Hybrid Fitness Continues to Grow
Since launching in Hamburg in 2017, HYROX has expanded to dozens of countries and continues to attract athletes from both elite and recreational backgrounds.
With its first outdoor Caribbean race, HYROX Cancún 2026 could represent another milestone for the sport as it continues to grow across Latin America and beyond.
For athletes competing this weekend, the challenge will remain the same: completing the eight-kilometre race and eight functional stations as quickly as possible while testing both endurance and strength.
