Sara Sigmundsdottir Receives Special Invite to World Fitness Project Tour Stop 1

Sara Sigmundsdottir has revealed that she received a special invitation to compete at the opening event of the World Fitness Project season in London this May.

Sigmundsdottir shared the update in a recent vlog on her YouTube channel while discussing her recovery and decision to sit out the 2026 CrossFit Open.

“I’m lucky enough that I got an invite for the World Fitness Project, which is the 1st to 3rd of May,” Sigmundsdottir said in the video. “That’s a way better timeline and gives me hopefully enough time to be as ready as I can.”

The London event is scheduled for May 1–3 and will serve as the first major competition of the World Fitness Project season.

Choosing Recovery Over the CrossFit Open

Sigmundsdottir also explained why she decided not to participate in the CrossFit Open this year. The decision came after evaluating the movements in the first workout of the season and considering the progress she has made during rehabilitation.

“If there’s a lot of bounding or any workout that could possibly set me back… it was going to be a coach’s call,” she explained.

After discussing the risks with her coach, the team chose to prioritize long-term recovery rather than rushing back into competition.

A Long Road Back

Sigmundsdottir has been one of the most recognizable athletes in the CrossFit scene for nearly a decade. She first rose to prominence with back-to-back third-place finishes at the CrossFit Games in 2015 and 2016 and later went on to win the CrossFit Open worldwide.

However, the last few years have tested her resilience. Injuries have repeatedly interrupted her seasons, including a serious ACL tear that forced her to miss the 2021 CrossFit Games campaign.

More recently, the Icelandic athlete has also dealt with health setbacks, including reactive arthritis, which affected her ability to compete consistently in 2024.

Because of those challenges, her return to competition has been gradual and carefully managed.

Eyes on London

With roughly nine weeks to prepare, Sigmundsdottir will continue rebuilding strength and conditioning while preparing for the London event.

The opportunity to compete at the first stop of the World Fitness Project tour gives the veteran CrossFit athlete a new goal as she works toward returning to the competition floor.
