Apple Unveils Major Health App Upgrades

| Sep 18, 2026 / 3 min read

Apple has invested heavily in personalized health over recent years, and this shows no sign of slowing down. The technology giant announced major health upgrades this week, including a daily readiness score, more frequent HRV tracking, and a health age metric.

The latest additions demonstrate Apple’s wish not only to allow users to collect health data but also to interpret it. Information on sleep, recovery, fitness, and heart health is key to turning guidance into action.

How Can Users Benefit From Apple’s Latest Innovations

Apple’s most advanced health experience will be accessible on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. The “Health Sensing System” offers the most accurate heart rate tracking among wearable tech. The readiness experience delivers insight into capacity, with both set to be available on a redesigned “Health” app coming to iPhone later in 2026.

Powered by Apple Intelligence, long-term health data and insights will be delivered holistically. All data is retained securely and under Apple’s control. Speaking on the announcement, Vice President of Health & Fitness at Apple, Sambul Desai, said:

“At Apple, we believe technology can empower everyone with actionable, science-based insights built with privacy at the core. By combining breakthrough sensing on Apple Watch with Apple Intelligence in the Health app, we’re able to translate complex biometric data into clear guidance for users.”

“This both helps people navigate their day-to-day routines with confidence and connects those moments with deeper context around their longevity, building a strong foundation for a healthier future.”

Heart Rate Measures Every 5 Seconds

Sensors on the Series 12 and Ultra 4 allow for heart rate checks every 5 seconds. This gives wearers faster, real-time updates on their bodies. Heart rate variability (HRV) is also measured more quickly, with the new software measuring the metric every 5 minutes.

The “health age” feature is another that will appeal to gym goers, runners, and hybrid athletes. Your age is calculated based on VO2 max, resting heart rate, sleep, and HRV. Users will also receive tips on how to improve their health age.

What Other New Features Are Available?

The Health app is set to feature movement assessments that work for strength, flexibility, balance, movement, and VO2 max. Users must position their device in front of them and ensure that their full body is visible in the camera. An on-screen instructor will then deliver AI-created audio and visual cues that can help make improvements to workouts
