I’ve used plenty of protein shakers over the years, but the Perfect Shaker ACTIV is quite different from the usual plastic shaker I’d throw in my gym bag.

It’s a 27oz stainless-steel shaker with double-wall insulation, an ActionRod mixing system built into the lid and a straw for drinking. Perfect Shaker says it can keep drinks cold for up to 24 hours.

They also sent me a customized version with my name and the BOXROX logo on it. I have to say, the design was probably the first thing that stood out to me. It looks awesome and the whole team now wants one.

But it’s also a premium shaker, so I wanted to see whether there was actually a benefit to using it day-to-day.

Product Overview

The ACTIV is made from double-wall stainless steel rather than plastic and is designed to keep drinks cold without condensation forming on the outside.

Instead of the loose shaker ball you get with a lot of bottles, Perfect Shaker uses its ActionRod system. It’s attached to the lid and moves through the liquid as you shake it.

The bottle is dishwasher safe, comes in a range of colors and can be customized with names and logos. Mine came in white with silver BOXROX branding and my name on the front.

Design & Usability

For me, this is probably the standout.

I love how this shaker looks. The white and silver combination gives it a really clean, premium finish, and the customization came out really well.

It’s the sort of shaker I’d happily take into work every day, rather than something that just lives in my gym bag.

I also really like the straw. I’ve never had a protein shake through a straw before, but there’s something about it that makes my normal chocolate protein shake feel more like I’m drinking chocolate milk. It sounds like a small thing, but I really enjoyed using it.

The ActionRod being attached to the lid is useful too. There’s no loose shaker ball sitting inside the bottle or another part to keep track of.

Real-World Testing

The insulation is actually one of the most useful features for me. I love making my protein shakes with milk, but I normally end up using water when I’m out because I don’t want milk getting warm while I’m driving, working or at the gym.

Having an insulated shaker changes that. I can make a shake with milk before I leave and not have the same concern about it warming up while I’m out.

Perfect Shaker says the ACTIV keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours. I didn’t test it for a full 24 hours, so I can’t verify that claim, but I really appreciate having an insulated shaker for the way I use it.

As for actually mixing a shake, I found the ActionRod really efficient with my normal protein powder and milk or water.

You do need to leave enough room inside the bottle for everything to move around properly. When I filled it too high, I found it didn’t mix as well. 

I also gave it a harder test. I normally add a scoop of 100% cocoa to my protein shake. I like adding it for the extra cocoa flavanols, but when I tried that combination in the ACTIV, it didn’t mix particularly well. 

So for me, the ActionRod works best with a straightforward protein shake. If I’m just using protein powder with milk or water, it does the job really well. If I’m adding extra powders, I’d be a little more cautious.

Cleaning & Durability

The stainless-steel construction feels solid and much more premium than the plastic shakers I’m used to.

It’s also dishwasher safe, which is useful for something I’m planning on using regularly. Perfect Shaker recommends rinsing it after use or putting it through the dishwasher and then letting it air dry with the lid off.

The double-wall construction also means you don’t get condensation forming on the outside when you have a cold drink inside.

I haven’t owned it long enough to tell you how it’ll look after a year of being taken to work and thrown around a gym bag, so I can’t make any long-term durability claims. My first impression of the build quality, though, is very good.

Pros & Cons

Pros

• Premium design and customization – I love the white and silver finish, and the personalized BOXROX branding gives it a really professional, high-end look.
• Insulation is genuinely useful – I prefer protein shakes with milk, so being able to keep one cold while I’m at work, driving or training makes a big difference for me.
• ActionRod works well for standard shakes – I found it really efficient when mixing a straightforward protein shake with milk or water.
• The straw is a surprisingly good addition – I’ve never drunk a protein shake through a straw before, and it genuinely makes my chocolate protein shake feel more like I’m drinking chocolate milk.

Cons

• It’s expensive for a protein shaker – I think the premium design helps justify it, but it’s definitely at the higher end if you just need something basic.
• It struggled with my protein and cocoa shake – I normally add a scoop of 100% cocoa to my protein, and I found the additional powder didn’t mix nearly as well as a straightforward protein-and-milk or protein-and-water shake. 

Who Is It For?

I think this makes the most sense for someone who trains regularly and uses a protein shaker most days.

If you just need something to mix a scoop of whey with water at the gym and drink it straight away, you can obviously spend a lot less.

Where the ACTIV becomes more useful is if you’re taking your shake to work, commuting, training later in the day or generally carrying it around for hours. That’s much closer to how I use a shaker, and having the insulation means I can use milk more often rather than defaulting to water.

The customization is also a nice touch. Mine looks great with the BOXROX branding, and if having something personalized matters to you, it definitely adds to the premium feel.

Performance – 16/20

For a normal protein shake, I found the ActionRod worked really well. The insulation is also genuinely useful for me because I can make a shake with milk and keep it cold while I’m out. I’d have scored it higher if it had handled my protein and cocoa mixture better.

Durability – 18/20

The stainless-steel construction feels solid and well made, and it’s dishwasher safe. I haven’t had it long enough to judge how it holds up over a year or more of daily use, so I wouldn’t give it full marks yet.

Design & Usability – 19/20

This is my favorite part of the product. I love the white and silver design, the customization looks great and it feels much more premium than a standard plastic shaker. I also really like drinking through the straw, which I didn’t expect to care about as much as I do.

Value for Money – 15/20

It’s definitely on the expensive side for a protein shaker. If all you need is something basic for the gym, there are much cheaper options. For me, the insulation, stainless-steel construction and premium design make the extra cost easier to justify because I’ll use it regularly.

Community Fit – 18/20

I think this fits people who train regularly and use a shaker throughout their day rather than only for a few minutes after a workout. If you’re taking protein to work, commuting or going straight from work to training, the insulation becomes much more useful.

Verdict

I really like this shaker.

The design is a 10/10 for me. Mine looks awesome, the customization is really well done and it feels like a much more premium product than the plastic shakers I’m used to. 

More importantly, there are practical benefits for me too.

Being able to make a protein shake with milk before leaving home and keep it cold is probably the biggest one. I also found the ActionRod really efficient for my normal protein shakes.

It isn’t perfect. My protein-and-cocoa combination didn’t mix particularly well, and there’s no getting around the fact that this is a premium-priced protein shaker.

But if you use a shaker every day and want something that looks good, keeps your drink cold and feels more premium than the usual plastic options, I think the ACTIV is a really cool product.

And I have to admit, I’m now a fan of drinking my protein shakes through a straw.
