Jay Crouch Drops 37 Places on Quarterfinals Leaderboard, Tia Comments “This is Crazy!”

When the Quarterfinals leaderboard first went live last Monday, Jay Crouch held the top spot worldwide. That changed on Wednesday, though, after his score for Workout 1 was adjusted, dropping him from 1st place to 38th.

Crouch was given a one-minute penalty for Workout 1, the event featuring overhead squats, shuttle runs, and burpees. His original time of 5:46, which ranked 2nd in the workout, was revised to 6:46, moving him down to 284th for that event.

CrossFit has not officially explained the penalty, but it has been confirmed that the issue stemmed from an incomplete set of overhead squats. Crouch performed 19 out of the required 20 reps, resulting in the 60-second penalty.

Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr also reacted to the situation, saying, “This is crazy! A 1min penalty for missing 1 rep. Ridiculous!”

So far, Crouch appears to be the only athlete on the Quarterfinals leaderboard to receive a penalty, as no other competitors in the top five have had their scores adjusted.

Because of the penalty, Crouch will miss out on the $5,000 prize awarded to the Quarterfinals winner. However, he is still set to compete at the Torian Pro next month and remains eligible for the online Semifinals if necessary.
