CrossFit Open Workout 18.1 Live Announcement – Sam Briggs

Sam Briggs is taking on Kristin Holte at the announcement of CrossFit Open Workout 18.1.

This will take place on Thursday the 23rd of February in Sao Paulo, Brazil and will be announced by Dave Castro, the mastermind behind all the workouts for CrossFit Games, Regionals, Open and more.

Sam Briggs

Sam Briggs is one of the fittest on earth. She won the CrossFit Games and Regionals in 2013 and has won the CrossFit Open couple of times. She is known as the Engine from England because her stamina is incredible. Her background in triathlon has given her a great base for longer conditioning workouts. 

She was born in 1982, which makes her 36 years old this year, meaning that she also qualifies for the Masters division. Sam is British, however she moved to Miami for the 2015 CrossFit season. She is back in England now and trains is her hometown of Manchester.


Sam Briggs has been competing in CrossFit since 2010 and has made it through to Regionals every year, except in 2012 when she has to take a break due to a knee injury. She has even qualified for the CrossFit Games 7 times.

Sam Briggs works out in her own gym, Train Manchester. Train Manchester was founded in 2011 and  has three boxes around Manchester, England.

Sam Briggs also battled against Kristin Holte last year, and beat her by 30 seconds. How do you think it will it go this year?

17.1 was a couplet with dumbbell snatches and burpee box jump overs for time:

  • 10 Dumbbell Snatches
  • 15 Burpee Box Jump Over
  • 20 Dumbbell Snatches
  • 15 Burpee Box Jump Over
  • 30 Dumbbell Snatches
  • 15 Burpee Box Jump Over
  • 40 Dumbbell Snatches
  • 15 Burpee Box Jump Over
  • 50 Dumbell Snatches
  • 15 Burpee Box Jump Over

In this video Sam Briggs goes against Camille LeBlanc Bazinet in 13.5. Camille wins this round, but Sam won the Regionals and Games in 2013.

13.5 is:

Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 4 minutes of:

  • 15 reps Thruster,65 pound
  • 15 Chest to bar Pull-ups

If 90 reps (3 rounds) are completed in under 4 minutes, time extends to 8 minutes.

If 180 reps (6 rounds) are completed in under 8 minutes, time extends to 12 minutes.

If 270 reps (9 rounds) are completed in under 12 minutes, time extends to 16 minutes. Etc.
