Team CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa Might Lose CrossFit Games Spot Due to Failed Drug Test

The team is appealing to the results.

A team member of CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa tested positive for a banned substance following the Africa CrossFit Semifinals. They are appealing to the results but could lose the invitation to the CrossFit Games they received after finishing 1st at the tournament.

CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa finished 1st in the Teams division at the Rebel Renegades Games, the African CrossFit Semifinals tournament and automatically received their invitation to the CrossFit Games. However, there is a big chance the team won’t be allowed to continue their path to fight for the title of Fittest on Earth.

UPDATED: On June 26th, CrossFit revealed Angelique Connoway was the athlete who failed the drug test and received a ban of 4 years.

According to a post by Michelle Merand, one of her team members tested positive for a banned substance. “We went to semi finals to win. We knew we would get tested,” she wrote.

Merand believes the positive test is likely due to cross-contamination. “Unfortunately we live in a world where things go wrong, supplements are contaminated, drug agencies make mistakes it’s just the way life works and it’s something we cannot control.”

She says they are in the appeal process with CrossFit and are “praying for a miracle” to be able to travel to Madison this August to compete at the CrossFit Games.

Merand’s other teammates are Angelique Connoway, AJ Visser, and Alan Foulis. At the time of writing, only Alan Foulis reacted to the news in an Instagram story. “We are standing strong, none of us would ever do anything like this. Please keep us in your prayers,” he wrote.

The African Semifinals have place for only one team to go to the CrossFit Games. CrossFit Inc. is yet to unveil the results of the appeal process for CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa. There are three possible outcomes:

  1. CrossFit rules in favour of team FBDV Mayhem Africa and the team is allowed to compete at the CrossFit Games.
  2. Team FBDV Mayhem Africa is able to prove there was cross-contamination from supplements and the team member who tested positive is banned for 2 years – the team is not able to go to the 2023 CrossFit Games.
  3. CrossFit rules against the appeal, the team member who tested positive is banned for 4 years and the team is not allowed to compete at the 2023 CrossFit Games.

Of those outcomes, it is extremely rare that outcome number 1 will happen. Although the team might prove its innocence, CrossFit believes it is the athlete’s responsibility to know what it puts inside their body. This is why Merand says they need a “miracle” to continue their way to the CrossFit Games.

In case that team CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa is disqualified, the rulebook states the next in line should be invited. Cape CrossFit Wolfpack finished 2nd at the Semifinals with 555 points.

Last year, Africa’s 1st place in the teams’ division also was barred from competing in the CrossFit Games after Lize Burns failed a drug test which was embroiled in controversy.

Team CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa Post

Below is Michelle Merand’s full post from Instagram.

It is with a very heavy heart that I sit and type this message. Unfortunately one of our team members yielded a positive drug test. We 100% know that no one took any kind of performance enhancing drugs and that these things happen to the best in the sport. We went to semi finals to win – we knew we would get tested. But unfortunately we live in a world where things go wrong, supplements are contaminated, drug agencies make mistakes it’s just the way life works and it’s something we cannot control.

We are in the appeal process with CrossFit and are praying for a miracle. We are going to stop all fundraising until we have concrete information going forward.

I ask that you keep us in your prayers. God always has a plan and right now we need to sit back and allow Him to take control where ever that might lead us.

Please when reading this post just take a moment before you judge or comment as we are all dealing with this as best we can.

This is my team and I stand with them 100%
