Mat Fraser will soon face a new challenge and run the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim. He will embark on this brutal 42-mile / 67km test alongside HWPO CEO Matt O’Keefe and HWPO Coach Josh Godinez.

Find out more about his thoughts and training for this event.

The journey begins on one rim of the Grand Canyon, where he will then descend to the Colorado River, climb to the opposite rim. Then turn around and do it all again back to where he started. Similar in a way to the trail run at the Ranch during the CrossFit Games, where athletes had to unknowingly repeat the entire course.

R2R2R is considered a bucket-list endurance adventure because it combines extreme heat, massive elevation changes, technical trails, remote terrain, and serious psychological difficulty.

What surprises many people most is that the challenge ends with a brutal uphill climb after you are already exhausted. The Grand Canyon can be deceptive, descending can feel relatively easy at first, but every step down eventually has to be climbed back out.

During warmer months, temperatures on the canyon floor can exceed 100–110°F (38–43°C), while the rims may be close to freezing, making temperature one of the biggest dangers of the entire experience.

Stay tuned to BOXROX to find out how Mat Fraser and his team fare during the challenge.
