If you spend any time around research peptides, you have seen the phrase “third-party tested” attached to almost everything. It sounds reassuring. It is also close to meaningless on its own, because the document that backs it up – the Certificate of Analysis, or COA – is something most buyers never actually open, and fewer still know how to read.
A COA is a lab report for a specific batch of material. Done properly, it tells you what the compound is, how pure it is, and who checked. Done carelessly – or dishonestly – it becomes a marketing prop: a PDF with a big number on it that falls apart the moment you look at the details. This is a practical guide to telling the two apart. No chemistry degree required.
START WITH ONE QUESTION: WHO RAN THE TEST?
The single most important thing on a COA is the name at the top, and it is the thing people skip. There are two very different documents that both get called “testing”:
– A supplier specification. This is the manufacturer’s own claim about what a product should be – a target, not a measurement. It is legitimate as a reference, but it is the seller grading their own homework.
– An independent third-party report. This is a measurement of an actual physical sample, performed by an accredited analytical lab with no stake in the sale. Janoshik Analytical is the name you will see most often in this space, and there are a handful of others.
If the report does not clearly name an independent lab, treat every number on it as a claim rather than a result. That is not cynicism; it is just reading the document for what it is.
MATCH THE BATCH, NOT THE PRODUCT
Here is the mistake that quietly defeats most people: they see a 99% purity report for “Product X” and assume it covers the vial in their hand. It often does not.

A COA certifies one lot – the specific run of material the lab sampled. Purity varies between production runs, so a certificate for an April batch says nothing about a June batch of the same product. Look for a batch or lot number on the report and check that it matches the one printed on your vial. If the report has no batch identifier, or the seller cannot show you which report belongs to your lot, the certificate is decorative.
The strongest link a seller can offer is a photograph of the tested vial in the report itself, showing the same lot number. That is the one piece of evidence that ties a paper certificate to a physical object.
THE TWO TESTS THAT ACTUALLY MATTER
Most legitimate COAs lead with two methods. You do not need to interpret the raw data, but you should know what each one answers:
– HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) answers how pure is it? It separates the sample into its components and reports the target compound as a percentage of the total. A single tall peak with little else is what high purity looks like.
– Mass Spectrometry (MS) answers is it actually the right molecule? It measures molecular weight to confirm identity. High purity of the wrong compound is still the wrong compound, which is why identity confirmation matters as much as the purity figure.
A report with a purity number but no identity confirmation has answered only half the question.
READ THE NUMBER IN CONTEXT
A headline like “99% pure” is easy to print and hard to verify. A few sanity checks:
– Is there a chromatogram? A real HPLC result includes the graph – the trace with the peaks – not just a typed percentage. A number with no chart behind it is an assertion.
– Beware suspiciously round, universal figures. If every product on a site carries the identical purity to two decimal places, that is a template, not a set of measurements. Real batches vary.
– Averages are not per-batch guarantees. “Our products average 99% purity” describes a catalogue, not your vial. It is a fair marketing statement only if the per-batch reports exist to back it up.
OTHER LINES WORTH A GLANCE

Depending on the compound and the panel, a fuller report may include heavy metals, endotoxin or microbial testing, and residual solvents. Not every certificate carries every panel, and the absence of one is not automatically a red flag – but a seller who can explain which panels they run and why is telling you they understand their own supply chain. That transparency is itself a signal.
A 30-SECOND CHECKLIST
Before you trust any peptide COA, confirm:
- An independent lab is named – not just the supplier.
- The batch number on the report matches the vial you received.
- Both HPLC (purity) and MS (identity) are present.
- There is an actual chromatogram, not only a headline percentage.
- The seller can produce the report on request, tied to your specific lot.
If a supplier passes all five, you are dealing with someone who treats transparency as the product. If they stumble on any of them, the certificate was never really evidence – it was decoration.
Research peptides sit in a market where documentation is easy to fake and rarely checked. Learning to read a COA properly is the cheapest quality-control step available to anyone working with these materials, and it takes about half a minute once you know what you are looking at.
