Shahad Budebs from The UAE was chosen as the global representative of CrossFit and National champ award winner!

“CrossFit games celebrated and recognized national champions and I was chosen to be recognized as the first UAE female as global representative of CrossFit. National champ award winner! I’m speechless and beyond blessed! I came, I represented and I will come back again! This is a message to all the Arab women. We can be national athletes and we can reach to high level competitions! We are here and we will come back stronger! Unfortunately I wasn’t there when they called my name, but I did come back for pics.✌?”

James Newbury won the “Most improved athlete” award

He finished in 5th place and described his event win as “Officially one of the most painful moments of my life, but worth every damn second”

The Spirit of the Games Award went to CrossFit veteran and former winner Sam Briggs. The 37 year old engine qualified for the Games as a National Champion, Sanctionals winner (twice), through the Open and as a Masters Athlete. Additionally, in the announcement her work ethic, humility, humour and commitment to the other athletes around her were also praised.

CROSSFIT GAMES DAY 4 RECAP

Sunday morning started down at the lake. All 10 remaining men and 10 women lined up ready to dive into the water.

SWIM PADDLE

  • 1,000-m swim
    1,000-m paddle

Time cap: 50 minutes

All the male and female athletes completed the event together.

Aussies Tia-Clair Toomey and Matt McLeod established an early and convincing lead over the rest of the competitiors. They were the first out of the water. Ohlsen and Gudmundsson both looked strong and confident coming out of the water as they moved onto the second section of the event.

Amanda Banhart, a former competitive swimmer herself, was second out of the water for the women. She was followed by Ohlsen, Shadburne, Newbury, Gudmundsson, Adams, Greene and Saxon Panchik and Mat Fraser.

As the athletes returned home on the paddle boards Tia and McLoed were neck and neck.

RINGER EVENTS

Events 10 and 11 were performed one after another with a short break in between. This was designed to act as a powerful way to shake up the leaderboard and make athletes fight for their places.

Ringer 1

30-20-10 reps for time of:

Air bike (calories)
Toes-to-rings

Time cap: 7♀ /  6♂ minutes

Ringer 2

15-10-5 reps for time of:

Burpees with ring touch
Overhead squats

♀ 95 lb.
♂ 135 lb.

Time cap: 5 minutes

Ringer 1 and Ringer 2 are separately scored events. Ringer 2 will begin 1 minute after the time cap for Ringer 1.

RINGER 1

Dave Castro programmed two back to back workouts close together, containing alternative versions of traditional exercises. These were toes to ring and burpees with ring touches.

The down and back format made for a visually strong spectacle. Athletes also needed to carefully gauge how much effort to put into the first workout without burning out in the second.

There were two scores up for grabs, making this a tactical, exciting workout to watch.

WOMEN

Kari Pearce fell off during the final set of toes to rings, smashing herself into the floor.

RINGER 1 RESULTS

Katrin Davidsdottir attacked both workouts with ferocity. She won Ringer 1.

RINGER 2 RESULTS

Tia closed the gap on Katrin in Ringer 2, but the Icelandic 2x CrossFit Games champion also took a convincing win in RINGER 2 as well.

MEN – RINGER 1 RESULTS

In the first heat, McLeod went out hard. Heppner challenged him and stole the lead in the first heat in 4:20 seconds.

In the second heat, as Ohlsen and Fraser enter the floor the tension of the situation, with Ohlsen wearing the leader shirt, could be felt throughout the atmosphere of the stadium. The pace on the first assault bikes was insane. Newbury was first off the bike.

The final fight between Ohlsen and Fraser was now on. Newbury dug deep and put in a brave performance in order to win heat 2.

Fraser looked possessed as he fought to steal and clinch as much ground as he possibly could to catch up to Noah Ohlsen.

RINGER 2 RESULTS

In the first heat of Ringer 2, Jacob Heppner took the win again with a time of 3:29. Will Moorad continued to have problems with this hamstring and chose not complete in this event.

In the second heat, Fraser was like a man possessed! BK Gudmundsson also left everything out on the floor.

As Fraser moved into the lead, the crowd counted down his final set of reps on the Overhead Squats. He stepped over the final finish line to thunderous applause.

30 snatches (Isabel)
