CrossFit Releases Statement on Ukraine, Stops Recognising the Governments of Russia and Belarus

The flags and names of Russia and Belarus will not be recognised in all CrossFit-licenced events until further notice.

CrossFit released an official statement March 1, 2022 regarding the Russian military’s actions in Ukraine.

The names and flags from Russia and Belarus will not be recognised throughout the CrossFit season and will be removed from the profiles of individual and team competitors, the company announced.

Additionally, CrossFit will cease to license or produce competitions in both countries until further notice.

“CrossFit unequivocally condemns the Russian military’s actions in Ukraine, and our hearts go out to the innocent people whose lives and safety have been put at risk,” the statement reads.

“We will separate our events and our sport from the national actors involved, but we will continue to support our independent affiliate owners, coaches, and athletes within our global CrossFit community.”

The announcement comes after Ukrainian athletes took to the CrossFit Open leaderboard to protest the war and call for Russian athletes to be banned, linking to a video of the Russian invasion.

“The season continues for Russia. Athletes remain eligible for The Open and qualify further. Results and places on the leaderboard remain,” CrossFit Russia posted* on Instagram explaining CrossFit’s statement.

“However, the Russian flag and country filter have been removed from the leaderboard. Also, the country name and flag have been removed from the athletes’ and teams’ profiles. The names of affiliates and affiliation with a region remain unchanged,” the post continued.

“On behalf of the Russian community we express our support to our Ukrainian friends, empathize and hope that reason will prevail and this war will stop!” the Siberian Showdown, a former CrossFit-licenced event based in Russia, posted* on Instagram four days ago.

The CrossFit Open is a global test of fitness run by thousands of small and independent gyms worldwide, with nearly 300,000 athletes already taking part in the competition. We will not recognize the governments of Russia or Belarus throughout the season, and we will remove Russian and Belarusian flags and names from the profiles of individual and team competitors. CrossFit will also cease licensing or producing competitions in the aforementioned countries until further notice.
