Sara Sigmundsdottir’s Favourite Moment of Her CrossFit Career So Far

Sara’s had many incredible highlights on the competition floor through her career so far, but one particularly stands out to her – find out which!

Sara Sigmundsdottir is a six-time CrossFit Games athlete and multiple Open, Regionals and Sanctional winner.

The Icelandic native made her CrossFit Games rookie appearance in 2015 after winning the Meridian Regional and went on to secure her first Games podium finish.

Her rookie year wasn’t only special because of her early success, but it was also the setting for Sigmundsdottir’s favourite moment of her career so far.

“In so many ways this is my favorite moment of my career so far and I remember it like it happened yesterday. Being at the @crossfitgames under the Friday night lights at the Tennis Stadium was a dream come true but at the same time an absolutely surreal experience for me. I was surrounded by many of the sports elite legends and I couldn’t help feeling a bit awestruck and out of place. It was during this event that I really realised that I was actually one of the competitors, not just someone who accidentally ended up there,” Sara wrote on Instagram.

“I was fairly calm heading into this event because there was no outside pressure. No thundering expectations on my shoulders. I was a rookie and I had a gameplan and I was just going to do the best I could.”

Crossfit Games 2015 – “Heavy DT”

In so many ways this is my favorite moment of my career so far and I remember it like it happened yesterday. Being at the @crossfitgames under the Friday night lights at the Tennis Stadium was a dream come true but at the same time an absolutely surreal experience for me. I was surrounded by many of the sports elite legends and I couldn’t help feeling a bit awestruck and out of place. It was during this event that I really realised that I was actually one of the competitors, not just someone who accidentally ended up there.

I had tried the “Heavy DT” a few months earlier after I had seen @anniethorisdottir do it and post about it. I tried it and managed to improve her score by a few seconds so I knew that this workout was up my alley, but at the same time by looking at the field I was competing against the thought that I could actually win the event never crossed my mind.

I was fairly calm heading into this event because there was no outside pressure. No thundering expectations on my shoulders. I was a rookie and I had a gameplan and I was just going to do the best I could. I managed to set a good pace fairly early and held on to the lead through much of the event. I had a belt on in case that my lower back would stiffen up, but then after three rounds I was just so pumped and motivated that without even thinking about it I ripped it off and threw it on the floor.

My family and friends sat right infront of my lane. They were waving the Icelandic flag and screaming their lungs out so I could see them and hear them the whole time I was doing the workout. To be able to pull off my first ever Crossfit Games event win in front of them made it even more special❤️

Sara Sigmundsdottir is currently recovering from a ruptured ACL, which forced her to miss the Open and so forgo her 2021 CrossFit season.

She is currently planning “the most epic comeback in CrossFit.”
