The 2021 CrossFit Open at Home – Two Ways to Compete

The 2021 CrossFit Open will feature flexible options for participants to compete either at their local gym or at home. For athletes not competing in an affiliate or gym, CrossFit announced there will be two divisions to Open workouts from home: basic equipment and equipment-free.

The CrossFit Open from home equipment option will require the following items:

  • A dumbbell*
  • A barbell and plates*
  • A plyo box*
  • A jump rope
  • A pull-up location

*Weights and heights have not been specified yet.

For athletes without access to equipment, CrossFit will offer “a gearless version of each Open workout,” for which only a clear space to work out is needed.

“The last year has been tough for everyone, so we want to kick off the 2021 season with a compelling and accessible Open that can meet the needs of every athlete in the world,” said Dave Castro, GM of Sport for CrossFit.

The 2021 CrossFit Open will be a three-week virtual competition and community event for CrossFit athletes around the world. Especially this year, it is designed to be accessible to everyone from beginners to professionals across all ages, backgrounds, and levels of fitness.

“A shorter Open means easier logistics for gym owners; a later start date gives more time for local reopenings; at-home options ensure access for all; masters, teen, and adaptive divisions welcome a broader group of participants; and continent-based semifinals guarantee that athletes from all areas of the world will be represented at the Games,” said Eric Roza, CEO of CrossFit. “I’m thrilled to be joining hundreds of thousands of CrossFit athletes around the world in this iconic event.”

Registration for the 2021 CrossFit Open will begin on Jan. 7, 2021. The first workout of the Open will take place on March 11, 2021.
