How Quickly Do You Lose Muscle After You Stop Lifting

It’s not all that bad news.

If you ever wonder how quickly do you lose muscle after you stop lifting, the answer lies just ahead with help from Jeff Nippard.

Jeff Nippard is a natural professional bodybuilder who shares tips and training programs on his YouTube channel. His latest video dives deep into how quickly do you lose muscle after you stop lifting.

Whether you stop going to the gym for medical reasons or simply because there are no options near you in the foreseeable future, the fact is that you are not lifting weight any longer. And the question that comes to mind is how quickly do you lose muscle after you stop lifting.

Know, first and foremost, that “just walking around is actually a lot better at preventing muscle loss than lying in bed all day, even if you aren’t actually lifting weights,” Nippard says, mentioning a study from 2017.

In that same study, most subjects did not see noticeable muscle loss within two weeks of not training as long as they bothered to get up and get dressed. According to Nippard, most people will start noticing muscle loss after three weeks of detraining.

Nippard also talks about different studies for longer periods of subjects who stopped training. One, for example, explains athletes who went to the gym for 2 months regularly and then stopped completely for another two months. In that case, compared to the before the training, the athletes gained 10% of muscle mass and later lost 5%, which means they were actually stronger even after 2 months of not lifting.

Ultimately, there are three main factors that will dictate how quickly do you lose muscle after you stop lifting:

  • How much you’re doing physically (getting up, walking around, being active without going to the gym necessarily)
  • How many calories you eat
  • How much protein you eat

If you are back to training, know that muscle memory is real and will help you build back whatever muscle loss you encountered in a much faster way compared to if it was the first time you were working out.
