After much speculation, Hyrox co-founder Moritz Fürste has finally put an end to the argument about where the name “Hyrox” came from. Unlike many had previously thought, it’s not related to “hybrid rockstars”.
Fürste was speaking on the Jake Dearden Podcast and revealed that the fitness competition was once set to be called “QUROX.” However, this Latin-inspired phrase for healing and running was given the boot following a legal issue: “We got sued five days before the first event.” Fürste said.
While Hyrox isn’t technically hybrid training, it’s closely linked to the introduction of hybrid athletes. However, Fürste was quick to explain that “it definitely has nothing to do with hybrid rockstars.”
Podcast listeners turned up the volume as the co-founder announced, “Maybe we can solve this once and for all”. However, the answer wasn’t what many were expecting.
Where Did the Hyrox Name Come From?
“We took basically 12 of the letters and did a legal test of what works. Hyrox was the one that came out with the highest percentage of not being able to be sued again.”
So that’s it. Hyrox isn’t an acronym or a nod to hybrid training. It was the safest name available at the time, with the team under pressure to deliver ahead of the first Hyrox competition. Instead of searching for a name with a hidden meaning, the founders threw a series of letter combinations into the ring.
It seems that Fürste isn’t 100% happy with the name. He responded, “Oh, 100%,” to Dearden’s comment, “You definitely learn from your mistakes.”
