Competing on home soil is often seen as an advantage, but for Elite 15 athlete Zara Piergianni, the 2026 HYROX EMEA Regional Championships in London proved that even familiarity comes with pressure.
Lining up at Olympia London for her 11th Elite-level race, the British athlete entered the weekend with momentum from earlier in the season. A win in Mixed Doubles at HYROX Amsterdam 2026 showed her potential, but recent performances highlighted the fine margins at the top level.
The Reality of Racing at Home
Speaking ahead of the event in an Instagram post by HYROX Official, Piergianni emphasized how much racing in London meant to her.
“It’s so nice having a race on home soil… having a home crowd… there’s just something special racing in the place that you’re from.”
That support, however, comes with heightened expectations. Piergianni finished twelfth in the Elite Women field with a time of 1:04:01, a result she openly acknowledged fell short of her standards.
“Last night’s performance showed me the work I’ve got to do, to where I want and need to be,” as she wrote on Instagram.
A Season of Learning
Her 2026 campaign has see strong performances with a few setbacks along the way. After winning in Amsterdam, she placed seventh at HYROX Katowice, reinforcing how competitive the Elite 15 field has become.
Piergianni has been transparent about the mental side of racing, especially when results don’t match preparation, as she shared on her Instagram.
“Effort isn’t always a guarantee of outcome… but that’s the beauty of it.”
That mindset reflects her broader approach to HYROX, where execution often separates athletes more than fitness alone.
Where Races Are Won and Lost
In a recent interview, Piergianni highlighted what truly determines performance in HYROX, challenging common assumptions about the sport.
“People don’t believe it’s a running race… when actually it makes up 50 percent of the race.”
She also pointed to key areas where races are decided, including transitions, sled work, and pacing strategy.
“Execution… is the dictator of how your race goes and where you finish.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the result in London, Piergianni remains focused on the bigger picture. With eyes set on upcoming majors and the World Championships, her trajectory continues to be one of growth rather than immediate perfection.
‘Nothing is ever guaranteed… but I’ll always fight until I throw my last wall ball,’ Piergianni shared.
On home soil, the result may not have been the one she wanted, but for Zara Piergianni, it was another step forward in her long-term pursuit of elite performance.
