Is Red Meat THAT Bad for Your Health?

Does eating red meat get in the way of your fitness progress?

Have you wondered if red meat is really that bad for your health? Have you heard this claim before? Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty and see what is up with this claim.

This will not be an article based on preference or what is good for the environment or even religious beliefs. Regardless of what you might think of eating red meat or not, the following paragraphs will look at it from the fitness perspective with the help of Dr Mike Israetel.

Dr Mike Israetel has a PhD in Sport Physiology and is the co-founder of Renaissance Periodization, a YouTube channel focused on hypertrophy. He is the person many bodybuilders turn to when it comes to anything related to building muscle.

Red meat is full of protein, the macronutrient necessary to build muscle. So, the more red meat, the better, right? Well, let’s see what Israetel had to say about that. He shared a video explaining if red meat is bad for your health. Check it out.

Is Red Meat THAT Bad for Your Health?

Right from the start, when posed the question regarding red meat and if it is bad for your health, Israetel says this is a myth, and one people used to believe in the 80s and 90s.

According to him, the myth that red meat was bad for your health back in the 80s and 90s was because there was a database showcasing the cons of eating red meat. What we now know is that data did not account for other people’s life choices such as smoking, drinking, and eating junk food, for example. These were only correlations, not exactly cause and effect.

At the time, studies would conclude that eating red meat was the cause of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, for example, which is not the case.

Mike Israetel explains that the more the database increased, the lesser you could see the cause and effect of red meat and the label of “bad for your health.”

According to Israetel, with more studies being done on the subject, it is found that:

  • It’s not clear that red meat, especially in moderation, is harmful to health
  • If red meat is bad for health, then certainly it is not terrible
  • There is a good chance that red meat is not bad for your health at all

So now you have this info on your memory next time someone tells you they are choosing not to eat red meat because it is linked with lessening one’s health. At least, now you know.

And that was Mike Israetel’s take on the matter of red meat and if it is bad for your health. To see a better explanation from the man himself, click on the video below.
