Deadlifts are an excellent exercise, but they are not mandatory for building strong hamstrings. Some lifters do not enjoy them, some cannot load them comfortably because of back or grip limitations, and others simply want more direct hamstring work alongside their squat and hinge training.

The good news is that the hamstrings respond well to several movements that do not require a conventional, sumo, Romanian, or trap bar deadlift. Strong hamstrings come from challenging them through their two main actions: bending the knee and extending the hip. They also benefit from progressive resistance, controlled eccentric work, and training at longer muscle lengths.

The hamstrings are a group of muscles on the back of the thigh. They include the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus. Because most of these muscles cross both the hip and knee, different exercises can emphasize them in different ways. A complete hamstring program does not need to be complicated, but it should not rely on one movement pattern alone. Here are three evidence based ways to build stronger hamstrings without deadlifts.
