Jeff Cavaliere Shares 13 Tips for Building Visible Six-Pack Abs at Any Age

| Sep 06, 2026 / 3 min read

At 51, Jeff Cavaliere is still showcasing a defined midsection, and in a recent ATHLEAN-X Youtube video, he breaks down the training, nutrition and consistency principles he uses to make visible abs achievable at any age.

Rather than relying on endless crunches or extreme dieting, Cavaliere explains that getting a six-pack requires combining effective abdominal training with sensible nutrition and sustainable habits.

Start With Hydration and Smarter Ab Training

Cavaliere begins with a simple morning habit: drinking 16 to 20 ounces of water upon waking. He argues that hydration provides the foundation for everything that follows, from training performance to nutrition.

He then turns to exercise selection and sequencing. Cavaliere recommends starting an ab workout with bottom-up movements, where the legs or pelvis move, because these exercises demand more energy and control. Top-down movements, such as crunch variations, can then be performed later when fatigue has accumulated.

He also encourages lifters to stop chasing high rep counts and instead focus on quality.

“Stop counting reps and instead make them count,” Cavaliere says, emphasizing controlled contractions over fast, sloppy repetitions.

Improve Your Ab Technique

For lower-ab exercises, Cavaliere says the pelvis should actively move rather than simply swinging the legs. He also recommends squeezing the knees together when possible to involve the adductors and improve pelvic stability.

For crunches and other top-down movements, he focuses on getting the shoulder blades off the ground and using what he calls the “folding rib cage” technique. The goal is to create a stronger contraction rather than simply bending at the neck.

Breathing also matters. Cavaliere recommends exhaling while drawing the stomach inward, or “cinching” the abdomen, to engage the transverse abdominis.

Nutrition Is the Foundation

Cavaliere stresses that ab training alone cannot reveal a six-pack. His plate strategy prioritizes fibrous vegetables, protein, starchy carbohydrates and moderate fats, making portion control easier without necessarily counting every calorie.

He also warns against extreme dietary restrictions.

“Avoiding apples, grapes, and carrots because you think that’s what’s standing between you and a six-pack” misses the bigger picture, he explains.

Make the Process Sustainable

Cavaliere’s final message is that consistency matters more than chasing shortcuts. He recommends allowing room for enjoyable foods while continuing to make sensible choices, because an unsustainable approach can make the entire process miserable.

Ultimately, visible abs come from combining nutrition, effective training, proper technique and consistency. As Cavaliere puts it, “you can’t out-train a bad diet.”
