As good as you feel after an excellent workout, returning to the gym can be a chore, and chores aren’t fun. Sometimes, you just don’t feel like it, and it is ok not to go. But that one time can quickly turn into two, three, or four times and suddenly, you find yourself lying around and skipping gym more often than you would like.  The question lingers: How to motivate yourself to go to the gym?

Therefore disciplining yourself is an absolute necessity, but to discipline yourself, you need to find the right motivation, which isn’t always easy. So how to motivate yourself to go to the gym? A few tricks come in handy when struggling to go to the gym. In the following paragraphs, I will give you some ideas on how and where to find the right motivation to do that workout you have been postponing.

Think of the Results

It is just human nature to think of the results of our actions. This might be the simplest way to motivate yourself to go to the gym.

We would much rather skip the results without doing the work, but that’s not how things work. So thinking of the results, but really and vividly thinking about them, is a significant motivation tool to make yourself go to the gym. 

When you don’t feel like working out the most, you need it the most. So, think about how much better you will feel after your workout, how much your mood will improve and how much more stimulated you will be to do what you need to do for the rest of the day. Seeing a brighter and happier version of yourself that is just a workout away will significantly stimulate you to go to the gym.

Reward Yourself 

This isn’t just a technique to motivate yourself to work out but also to stay motivated. You do something great for yourself every time you work out, and every workout counts equally and deserves a reward

Do something for yourself after each workout session – buy yourself something to wear, do some activity you like, or allow yourself to be lazy for the rest of your day. You can reward yourself with a tasty meal that will also help you build your muscles. A combination of chicken and rice can be a perfect post-workout meal. 

So, whatever you feel would reward you, do it.

Workout = Cheat Day 

Next in my list on how to motivate yourself to go to the gym goes hand-in-hand with the previous argument.

An active life isn’t easy; it involves discipline on many levels. If you work out regularly, chances are you watch what you eat, so you probably give up on foods you like. Therefore, save your cheat days for situations when you don’t feel like working out.

There are days when you can work out and eat right, but there are days when you can’t do both, and those days are cheat days. When you feel like you don’t want to work out, think of a juicy burger or fries, or whatever you crave at the moment, and think about how good it would feel to treat yourself to your favourite but forbidden food.

Then, think about how lousy it would feel to have that food and not work out. It would be like breaking a covenant between you and yourself. So go and have a great workout and treat yourself to your favourite food; you deserve it. 

Create a Feasible Routine 

There is such a thing as too much ambition, which is the killer of all dreams. It is easy to fall off the wagon when you expect too much of yourself, and getting on the wagon afterwards is that much harder. 

Creating a workout routine that fits perfectly in your lifestyle is the key to consistency, a crucial factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. 

When you don’t feel like working out, remember that your workout is meant for you and you like doing it, it won’t take up too much time, and you won’t have to do it again tomorrow. Creating a routine that is too hard and straining, takes too much of your day, or too frequently leads to failure. 

Assess your lifestyle objectively and create the most practical workout routine you don’t feel pressured by.

Do the Thing You Like 

If you are a dance-lover, weightlifting is something you shouldn’t do, as you won’t have fun and will associate it with strain and boredom. If you are a weightlifting lover, you shouldn’t do aerobics; if you are a yoga enthusiast, you shouldn’t go running.

It seems obvious, but to discover how to motivate yourself to go to the gym and work out you only need to associate the gym with something you like. That will keep you motivated.

When you do something you don’t like, it is natural to want to avoid it, so motivating yourself to go to the gym and do something that doesn’t please you is very hard. On the other hand, if you like the activity you signed up for, you will find it easy to get out of bed and go to the gym as you know you will enjoy it.

Be Flexible 

A rigid branch breaks, but a flexible one bends, and it lives to see another day. It is the same with you, especially when it comes to exercising. Placing yourself in too tight frames will eventually result in a full breakdown. 

So give yourself space, and don’t beat yourself up if you can’t make it today. Sometimes you are stuck in traffic and have something urgent to resolve, so flexibility is the key to a consistent workout routine. 

Take It Easy 

Your gym plan is not set in stone; you know, you can change it and feel good about it. If your gym plan today was intense and draining, but you woke up and didn’t feel like doing all that work, skipping the gym is never the answer. Instead of doing nothing, do a lighter workout, save your energy and relax. 

Call a Friend

Sometimes we need a boost from a friend to keep us in line. Call a friend to keep you company at the gym or work out with you if nothing else works. The energy and enthusiasm from that person will rub off of you, and you will find the strength to do another workout.

If you already have a gym partner, don’t think twice before calling them for that extra nudge to keep you moving.
