Vehicle Pull
The vehicle pull is one of the most iconic and visually striking events in World’s Strongest Man history. First introduced in 1977, it challenges athletes to haul massive vehicles—such as trams, buses, trains, and even planes—over a 100-foot course as quickly as possible. While early versions of the event relied solely on a harness, modern competitors typically use both a harness and a rope, creating a more balanced test. The original harness-only format often favored heavier athletes with greater body mass.
Event organizers frequently select vehicles that reflect either the host city or notable athletes. For example, a fire truck was used in 2007 to honor 2006 champion Phil Pfister, a professional firefighter, while a coal truck appeared in 2008 as a nod to West Virginia’s mining heritage. The challenge is further varied by changing terrain, with pulls taking place on surfaces like sand, snow, ice, and concrete. Some editions have added extra difficulty—such as in 1979, when a tram was filled with passengers, pushing the total weight beyond 4,500 kg.
Bruce Wilhelm, a two-time WSM champion, set the benchmark in the very first vehicle pull by completing a 21-meter course in just 14 seconds. His performance highlighted that success in this event depends not only on raw strength, but also on endurance, technique, and determination.
Toss
The Keg Toss draws inspiration from the long-standing traditions of the Highland Games. Similar to a weight-for-height contest, it demands explosive power, as athletes must launch kegs of increasing weight over a 4.42-meter wall in a single attempt.
The event has seen a few variations over the years. In 2003 and again in 2006, competitors threw concrete blocks instead of kegs, with the challenge progressing by raising the height of the wall rather than increasing the weight.
Today, kegs are used exclusively, typically weighing between 15 kg and 24 kg. Clearing the wall cleanly in one throw remains a serious test of strength, timing, and technique.
Stone Carry
This event was first added to the World’s Strongest Man lineup in 1992. According to legend, the original stone was crafted in Iceland more than 200 years ago and used by a local pastor to prop open the door of his stable. It remains in Húsafell, Iceland, at the site of Pastor Snorri Björnsson’s farm.
The stone itself is a flat, roughly triangular rock weighing 182 kg. In competition, athletes must carry it held high against the chest over a set distance as quickly as possible. During the years when WSM was hosted in Africa, a specially shaped version resembling the African continent was introduced, and the event was temporarily renamed the Africa Stone.
