Chris Hinshaw: How to Teach Crossfit Mental Toughness

Are you tough enough? Chris Hinshaw - former professional Ironman and endurance coach to Crossfits’ top Athletes - would say no. But here’s how to improve.

Have you ever heard the idea that if you are the smartest, fittest or strongest person in the room, then you need to find a bigger room? If you want to explode your Crossfit endurance and mental toughness, then you need to find the room that Chris Hinshaw is coaching in.

BOXROX met up with him during a recent Berlin seminar and training session that he and Katrin Davidsdottir held in Berlin at Myleo Crossfit Box.

His distinguished coaching roster includes Rich Froning, Katrin Davidsdottir, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet and Jason Khalipa amongst many others.

What I learned is that you incorporate psychological training into the workouts…If you underestimate the amount of pain before you get there, you’re going to fail in your performance.

You’re going to back off because it’s worse than you though it was going to be.

Chris Hinshaw is a former All-American collegiate swimmer and a highly experienced professional triathlete.

His impressive achievements include:

  • 2nd place overall finish at the Hawaiian Ironman World Championships.
  • 2nd place overall finish at Ironman World Championships in Canada.
  • 1st place overall finish at Ironman Brazil.
  • He is also is a 2-time member of Team USA at the Hawaiian Ironman.

About The Author

Editor-In-Chief at BOXROX. I come from a background of rugby and weightlifting. Growing up in the English Lake District, I spent a great deal of time swimming in its stunning lakes and rivers. In 2015 my brothers and I became the first people to swim the 145km length of the River Eden, from source to mouth, in 9 days. We also swam the Corryvreckan whirlpool, the third largest in the world, and Crossfit is a huge part of my training for these events.
