Max Posternak talks about some substitutions that will save calories and taste just as good as the high-carb foods people normally eat.

Foods That Have Almost Zero Carbs

1. Cloud Bread

This is a great substitute for regular bread. It tastes just as good and it also contains half the calories as the traditional bread people buy at the bakery. It is also full of protein and, you guessed it, zero carbs. To make them yourself, you just need eggs, cream cheese and cream of tartar.

2. Cauliflower Rice

Replacing regular rice with cauliflower rice is a great way to reduce your carb intake. One cup of cauliflower rice has about 5 grams of carbs, compared to 45 grams of white rice.

3. Tortilla Cheese Wrap

Most substitutes for the regular flour wrap don’t’ taste good or fall apart in Posternak’s opinion. But he discovered the cheese wrap that will save carbs and overall calories. A cheese wrap has 110 calories with only 1 gram of carb – a regular tortilla wrap has 210 calories and 40 grams of carbs.

4. Portobella Mushroom Caps

These are those big mushrooms that you could use as a replacement for a burger bun, for example. It is very tasty if you grill them before using them as buns for your burger.

5. Mashed Potatoes with Cauliflower

Well, it isn’t mashed potatoes, but rather mashed cauliflower that can mimic the looks and taste of mashed potatoes when done correctly. You can eat 4 cups of mashed cauliflower and still would not match the amount of calories or carbs that you would get from 1 cup of mashed potatoes.

6. Kelp Noodles

These noodles are made from kelp, an algae-based sea vegetable, and they are made from kelp, water and salt. You can eat incredible amounts of kelp noodles for your pasta and still would be difficult to overeat in terms of carbs or calories.

A 4 ounces portion of kelp noodles has 6 calories, 3 grams of carbs of which 1.5g is dietary fibre. The same amount of spaghetti will have 160 calories and 35 grams of carbs.

7. Zucchini

Zucchini is a vegetable full of water which makes it perfect for low-calorie diets. By getting a spiraliser, you can transform your zucchini into noodles and replace your spaghetti with zoodles.

8. Pork Rinds

A crunchy snack high in protein that is very low in carbohydrates. Plain pork rinds have zero carbs and the barbecue option has around 0.5g of carbs per serving.

For a very tasty carb-free bread crumb, put pork rinds and parmesan cheese in a food processor.

9. Parmesan Cheese Crisps

Another one on this list of foods that have almost zero carbs is the now-popular parmesan cheese crisps. Even if you can’t find them in stores where you live, you can make them your own relatively easily.

10. Unsweetened Cashew Milk

Replacing milk with low-fat or skim milk will still get you a somewhat high amount of carbs. This is when you should choose unsweetened cashew milk that contains 1 gram of carb per cup, which is as low as you can get with a milk substitute.

11. Stevia

Stevia is a great natural replacement for sugar that helps lots of people not only with diabetes but also those looking to lose weight as it’s essentially calorie-free.

12. Nori Sheets

Make close-to-zero carb sushi using nori sheets and cauliflower rice. You may also cook the sheets in the oven with some olive oil to make them crispy to eat as a tasty snack.

13. Shirataki Noodles

Another option to replace regular pasta or noodles that have zero net carbs in an 8-ounce serving.

14. Kale Chips

On a baking sheet, put the kale with a spoon of olive oil and salt and bring it to the oven for 10-15 minutes and you have a healthy snack full of vitamins and close to zero carbs if you disregard the dietary fibre.
