Pursuit for Better: Mat Fraser on Training, Addiction, Sobriety and Excellence

Beam are constantly pushing the frontiers when it comes to creating performance, recovery and health related products for the worldwide sporting community. In their latest advancement they have recently launched their “Pursuit for Better” project.

Pursuit for Better is a platform that highlights and celebrates the great people in the functional fitness, yoga, pro sports, CrossFit® and beam community, their stories, and how beam create products to support them and the community in general.

The first person that beam have chosen to feature is four-time CrossFit Games® champion Mat Fraser. Additionally, beam have worked with him to create the most in-depth and personal documentary on his personal and professional history ever produced.

Mat Fraser describes the word pursuit as “progress not perfection”. The film goes into depth about many previously unknown elements of the champion’s life, history and relationships. He offers advice for today’s kids, training tips, mentality, his thoughts on addiction, getting sober, the path to a full life and the death of an exceptionally close friend. This window offers a very human side to Mat, a determined, intelligent and driven man that inspires millions of people all around the world.

“I don’t care if you’re running towards your goal, or if you’re on your knees f**king crawling, just stay pointed in that direction. Keep chugging, you’ll get there.” Mat Fraser.

MAT FRASER PURSUIT FOR BETTER DOCUMENTARY

Watching elite CrossFit® athletes compete in the spotlight at events such as the Games®, it can be easy to discount the hundreds of thousands of hours they have spent honing and perfecting their craft. Going deeper, often the roots and support for the drive, determination and hard work that people like Mat put in are washed over and ignored. Beam wanted to bring these human aspects into the film.

Mat even allowed beam to talk about his path to sobriety

“I don’t know how many people know that I’m sober. I was 17 years old and I had some great opportunities in front of me…I had a full scholarship to the Olympic Training Centre. I got to pursue my Olympic dreams at the best place to do it and I just kept f**king up. I knew that I had an addictive personality and it was showing.”

Mat decided to quit drinking, and found the process difficult.

“I really just secluded myself and I started working out like crazy. I was in the gym one day and he (Nate) came up ‘hey man how you doing?’ and I just broke down right in the middle of the gym.”

His close friend Nate was clearly supportive during this time and they ended up attending meetings together. Soon after Mat went away to college, he received the terrible news that Nate had relapsed and taken his own life. When commenting on this experience he stated “Nope, not taking that chance”.

The champ went on to discuss the effects of addiction.

“With addiction, it’s not like you press pause and when you relapse you just hit play and you start off where you left off. Your addiction is out in the parking lot doing push-ups, it’s getting stronger.”

Mat and beam further discussed his friends and family and the support network that allow him to succeed on his pursuit of better.

SAMMY MONIZ

“The biggest thing she does is just love me. And it’s not dependent on anything I do, how I dress, how I look…nothing. So that is a very big security blanket to me to push me to gamble on myself, to take a chance at this very risky career. I know if I fail, nothing changes.” Mat Fraser

Sammy Moniz, Mat’s fiancé and the creative mind behind feeding the Frasers talks about Mat’s decision-making process: “He really understands that there are two decisions you can make in any situation. A decision that’s going to bring you towards your goal or a decision that’s going to bring you away from it.”

When asked about his first memory of his personal strength and drive in a competitive sphere, Mat Fraser related a story from his early years.

“When I was about 12 years old I was a heavier kid…I always got picked on for it…I remember getting home from school that day and saying No. I started eating cans of tuna and water, bags of spinach and I would do sit ups, push ups and run on the treadmill. At 12 years old I would put on the hoody, put the hood up and go in the dirty basement. I would run 6 – 8 miles.”

“I think that was the first dose I had of: if you want to do something, just go do it. Start working towards it.”

“I think the general population doesn’t realise how powerful they are”

After working with Mat, beam created two new products specifically inspired by him and his story. These are designed specifically to help you optimise recovery and performance in the AM and PM.

AM – CLARITY

This clarity-boosting blend fuels your focus all day long. It’s packed with adaptogens like lion’s mane, rhodiola, ashwagandha, and their nano CBD powder that work together to jumpstart your mental energy.

Suggested Use: Mix one scoop with 6 to 8 ounces of your beverage of choice. Drink first thing in the morning, or sip any time throughout the day for some added clarity.

All-natural ingredients:

  • Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that helps balance stress levels and boost brain power
  • Rhodiola is another adaptogenic herb that helps sustain energy, endurance, strength, and mental capacity
  • Lion’s Mane is a mushroom superfood that supports brain function and memory

Improve your focus and energy now

Beam’s CBD powder is 100% THC-free. It is also nano-based and packed with lots of (microscopic) particles for better absorption.

PM – DREAM

This blend combines compounds such as melatonin, magnesium, L-Theanine and their special nano CBD powder to help your body and mind wind down for a deeper night’s sleep, as well as optimising your recovery. It is best taken before bedtime to maximise the effects.

  • Melatonin regulates the sleep wake cycle
  • Magnesium is important for many processes in the body, including regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure and producing protein and bone
  • L-Theanine promotes relaxation without drowsiness and offers stress relief

Enhance your sleep and recovery

CBD ABSORBTION

For CBD to have any effect, it must enter your bloodstream. Normal CBD is clunky—like a basketball trying to make its way through a small space.

Beam blends CBD is a revolutionary form called nano CBD. Instead of a basketball, nano CBD is like a marble—tiny and highly absorbed. This allows you to absorb more CBD per milligram of oil or powder, making the CBD much more effective and quicker to act. The final nano product happens to be extremely rare and it is what makes beam’s CBD so special.
