The answer is “it depends.” Phillips says that science is quite clear on it assuming you are in a caloric deficit and are consuming adequate amounts of protein. “The ratio of carbs to fats should not matter when trying to drop body fat.”

However, before you get disheartened, Phillips says that in his 18 years of experience as a nutritional and fitness coach, there is some difference. If you’ve experienced success dropping fats to get lean, you should do that. On the other hand, if you’ve experienced success cutting back on carbs to get lean, that is the path you should be using again.

Stress also has some correlation with the ability to lose weight. If you are someone who is experiencing a lot of stress, however it may be, “you are somebody that should probably opt for slightly less fats and more carbohydrates to help you attenuate that stress response.”

If you are not living a stressful life or moment at this particular time, chances are you are not going to require as many carbohydrates.

In the end, carbs or fats is not as important as overall calories you are consuming and having enough protein in your meals.
