What Happens to Your Body on Testosterone
An average healthy male should produce around 4-9 milligrams of testosterone from cholesterol per day. Not all testosterone made impacts your body in the way testosterone is supposed to – part of it is converted into estrogen daily, the primary female sex hormone that is present in men in more limited quantities – and some of it into DHT, which impacts beard growth, body hair growth, and adam’s apple size.
Two per cent of the remaining testosterone is found everywhere in the body, known as free testosterone, and is able to attach to androgen cells. If it binds to muscle cells, it stimulates muscle protein synthesis (maintaining and building more muscle).
The other 98% of the testosterone left is known as bound testosterone, which attaches to sex-hormone globulin or albumin. “As strange as it sounds, this testosterone can no longer perform many of the physiological functions of testosterone such as increasing muscle protein synthesis, supporting erectile health and libido and benefiting your overall mood.”
When more free testosterone is able to bind to muscle androgen receptors it creates powerful conditions for muscle growth. A study found that giving men 600 mg of testosterone every week made them gain 7 pounds of muscle without performing any exercise. The other men who did strength training, but did not receive any testosterone, gained 4 pounds of muscle. Another group who did both, testosterone steroids and strength training, gained 13 pounds of muscle.
Higher levels of testosterone also help you get and stay lean. It isn’t scientifically clear how testosterone helps with losing weight, but it is likely that testosterone has an influence on increasing a person’s metabolic rate and an increase in the number of red blood cells in the body.
Testosterone replacement therapy also leads to significant improvements in energy levels, friendliness and overall being. However, it is true that higher testosterone increases a man’s desire to seek social dominance.
